Name those Logos

Go through several magazines and cut out advertisement symbols (ie. the 7up dot, but not the word 7up). Paste each on the white side of a 3x5 card and have everyone go around the room with an answer sheet and try to identify as many of the symbols as possible.

Who am I?

Pick a category such as cartoon characters, movie stars, vegetables, etc. Pin the name of one of these items on the back of each guest as they arrive. Tell them that they need to find out who they are by asking other people for help.

The rules are:

  1. ask yes or no questions only
  2. answer yes or no questions
  3. no removing your own name tag to find out. If you ask, anyone will help you find out your identity.

If you need people seated or grouped up this may be a good way to do it. Have place cards at the seat of each item. Or have a few different categories of item to guess. Then when it comes time to group up have the cartoon characters go here, vegetables there, etc.

Association Game

Put the following on a table:

  • A calendar
  • The letter "K"
  • A match in a bottle of water
  • Jar of 16 candies
  • Toothbrush
  • Pitcher
  • Candle
  • Salt
  • Fork
  • Tacks
  • Buttercup (Reeses?)
  • the letter "N"
  • Stamp
  • 2 dice on a dish of dirt
  • An Iron

When the guests come have the previous articles on a table. As they come, give them the following list. Match the statements on the list with the items on the table.

  1. End of pork ("k")
  2. A bunch of dates (Calendar)
  3. A swimming match (match in the bottle)
  4. Sweet sixteen (Candies)
  5. Never borrowed, never lent (toothbrush)
  6. Seen at a ball game (pitcher)
  7. Out for the night (candle)
  8. The ending of a Biblical Character (Salt)
  9. Branching of a river (Fork)
  10. On of the causes of the American Revolution (Tacks)
  11. A spring flower (buttercup)
  12. The end of ambition ("N")
  13. Ready to be licked (Stamp)
  14. A paradise on earth (dice)
  15. Birthplace of Burns (Iron)

Party Starters have two purposes. First, to get things officially started with a bang. Second, some divide up a large group into smaller groups. Group games go much smoother and people are more willing to participate if they are split up from people they know and put into a random group. Grouping games are perfect for this.

The Grouping Game

This is a good game to play as a mixer. It is a fun, fast moving game. It starts out as everyone collects in one big group. The leader initially calls out a number, usually a number between two and fifteen. The number shouldn't be more than half of the number of total participants. When the number is called out everyone must try to collect in a group that contains that number of people. The group members should be latching arms or have their arms wrapped around each other so that the leader can see who is in the group. If someone cannot enter a group because the number of required members has been reached, he is out of the game. As different numbers are successively called out the number of participants gets smaller and smaller. Eventually, there are less than ten people. The last group, or winning group, should have anywhere from two to five people.


Everyone writes the name of a celebrity, famous person or character on a piece of paper which they stick to the forehead of the player on their left (use tape or office Post-It notes). Make sure they don’t see the name.

Everyone else can see your forehead. The objective is to work out who you are.

Going around the table, each payer takes a turn to ask the party questions about who they are - answers can be YES or NO only. If you get a YES you may continue asking, if you get a NO play moves on to the left.

Last person to guess their name is the loser.
Simple, but very absorbing.

Noah's Ark

The group divides in two parallel lines facing each other across the room (perhaps boys/girls but doesn't matter). Each person is assigned an animal whose match is across the room somewhere. After being given a moment of thought, everyone in the room acts like the assigned animal and walks (crawls, flaps, waddles, etc) across the room in search of their mate. No human language is allowed. When people think they have discovered their mate, the go to the referee. The pandemonium proceeds until everyone has been mated.

To help with the assignment of animals perhaps you could make two sets of animal cards to pass out to people. In this case, the people wouldn't need to be in parallel lines across from each other. They could just be in a big circle or anywhere in the room.

Pass the Orange

Arrange for teams of about 8 to stand in a line, one behind the other (arranged boy, girl, boy,...).  Give each team an orange which the first person should tuck under his chin.  This should be passed to the person behind.  When the orange gets to the last person, they come to the front of the line and start again.  The winning team is the first one which gets their starting person to the front again.

Creepers and Slammers

Good for large groups too!  Sitting at a table, having people on either side of you and across from you.   Divide your group into two teams.  One team at a time takes a turn passing a quarter under the table carefully so that the people across from you on the other team can't see where the quarter is.  Then at any time the other team that doesn't have the quarter tells you to stop!   They either yell "CREEPERS", All the people on the team that has the quarter must bring both hands up on the table and slowly try to open their hands with their palms down trying not to allow the quarter to drop loudly. The opposite team tries to guess where the quarter is.  If the opposite team calls  "SLAMMERS"   then everyone on your team brings their hands up quickly slamming them down with palms down and open.  The other team tries to guess who has the quarter.  Just take turns until you are tired of playing.  It is a lot of fun and everyone can join in. The winner is the team with least number of guesses to find the quarter.

Active games

Pass It ON

Sit close together in two lines facing the same direction. The person in the front of each line rolls a die. When one of them gets a six, both of them pass a small object (a jack, a ball, a bracelet) to the person behind them who passes it on until it reaches the end. When it gets to the last person, that person must get up and race to the front of the line with the object and sit down. The person who sits down first, gets to sit in the front of the line. The person who was second to sit down, goes back to his or her spot. Whichever line rotates from back to front first, wins.

Dragon Tail Tag

Make small chains of about four people. Either have team members hold on to each others waists or link elbows. The end person has a flag or tail (bandana) hanging behind them or in their back pocket. Teams must stay linked to participate.

The object of the game is to steal other teams tails while avoiding other teams who are trying to steal your tail. The last team to have a tail wins.

Musical Chairs

The old favorite.  With one fewer chairs than people, a short snippet of music is played while the people move around the room.  When the music stops everyone tries to sit on a vacant chair.  (Only ONE person per chair)  The person who doesn't find a chair is out.  One chair is taken away and the game continues until only one person (The Winner) is left.

Balloon Stomping Game

Each participant blows up a balloon and ties it with a bit of string or wool to his/her ankle. On the given command, the guests (only using their feet) try to be the last person to have their balloon bursted ie, you stamp on your opponents. Again great fun, caution is eered on anyone getting carried away with the stamping. As survivors get fewer, reduce the playing area.

Party On games are good at any time... everyone or just some party participants can play these fun games

Santa Hat Game

For festive gatherings with Santa hats. You need everyone to be wearing a hat, so either use the ever popular Santa hats, or otherwise give everyone a normal party hat.

The game is based on observation. the objective is NOT to be the last person left with a hat on.

At the start announce the simple objective, the only rule is that no one can take their hat off until you have.

Let another game or conversation take place, and as time goes by, people will take their attention off you, and even forget the game is happening. Eventually remove your hat and watch as people cotton on. Gradually the hats will come off, amidst sniggers and smirks. Some unsuspecting person (who’s probably busy boring everyone with a hopeless story)
will be last to notice, and much to every ones’ mirth, this person is the loser.

Serve up an appropriate forfeit, get the hats back on and give the loser the chance to start the next game.

Winking Murder

All except the detective sit in a circle while the detective waits outside.  One person from the circle is elected to be the murderer, and then the Detective is called back to stand in the circle.  When he is ready, the Murderer winks at people in the circle.  Anyone who sees that they have been winked at lets out a blood-curdling scream and dies.  The Detective has three attempts to guess the murderer

Birthday Present Game


  • 1 Pair of Gloves
  • 1 Hat
  • 1 Die (perhaps two dice if group is large)
  • A Prize wrapped in several layers of newspaper and boxes.

The group stands in a circle. The gloves, hat, and wrapped box are placed in the center. someone begins by rolling the dice. If they roll a 6, they hurry into the middle and put on the gloves and hat. They then start to unwrap the package. They must move fast because the next person to roll a 6 takes the hat off of the person in the center. The person in the center stops immediately and takes off the gloves, gives them to that person, and he/she goes back to the circle. The game continues like this until the package is completely unwrapped and the last person receives their prize. It's really noisy and incredibly fun!

I Have Never

Each person receives several counters (toothpicks, pennies, etc.)  

Then take turns around the circle.  Each person tells of something they have never done (example: I have never broken a bone or I have never traveled out of the country).  Anyone who has done this must give the speaker one of their toothpicks or pennies.  After going around the circle several times, the person with the most tokens wins. 

What's your Name Sweetie


  • About 6 different candies that have given names like M&M's, Crunch, Wrigley's , etc.
  • 1 Dice (or 2 dice if the crowd is very large)

Everyone is seated on the floor in a circle. Packaged candy bars or candy are placed in the middle of the circle. Everyone starts by saying their own names. The leader then makes sure that everyone knows what candy is in the middle. someone begins by rolling the dice. If they roll a 6, they can take one of the candies in the middle. The die continues to go quickly around the circle while people keep picking up candy. When all of the candies are taken, people then can get other people's candy.

In order to get their candy, they must state the person's first name and the name of the candy they hold. The person who rolls a 6 and matches the name of the candy and the person takes the other's candy. If they forget either name, they miss their turn and the dice goes to the next person and they continue to roll. (One person can get more than one candy and people can hide the candy behind their back). This is a great way of getting to know people's name and how to get your favorite candies!

ANNA BANANA  -   Before telling the story, take a banana (not too ripe), and using a long needle, such as a needlepoint needle, and push the needle through the fruit of the banana all the way to the other side and move it back and forth, making a cut in the fruit, but not the skin.  Do this every inch down the banana, making the holes under each other so that they can be easily hidden by keeping that side towards you!  Then put a smilie face on using a black marker.

Tell this story to the girls:
This is Anna Banana, a new girl in our trooop.   She wants me to tell you a story of what happened to her last year.  She went to a new school, and for some reason, kids made fun of her. They said mean, hurtful things like you look different from us, we don't want to play with you.  You dress differently than we do, so we don't like you. This hurt Anna Banana's feelings, but she didn't let anyone know it.  See how she is smiling?  She always smiled no matter how she was feeling inside.  But she wants to show YOU how she felt.  (Start peeling the banana, the fruit will fall into slices. - Explain to the girls that even though someone may look like hurtful words don't hurt them, they are probably falling apart on the inside. 


BALLOON BALL  -  Items Needed: one balloon, blown up

Split the girls into two teams.  Each team makes a row, with the two rows facing each other, with their feet touching the person across from them.  The leader starts the game by throwing the balloon up in the middle, and each player has to try and make the balloon fall behind the other team.


DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO  -  This is a silly and fun game to break the monotony!  Have the girls stand in a line across from you.  Tell them to do as you say, not as you do.  Give them a command such as putting their fingers on their noses which you do something different, such as put your hand on your head.  If a girl messes up, she is out and must sit down.  Do this until you are the only one left standing! 


FOOD CHAIN  -  Items needed:
30 pieces of "food" (2x2 pieces, 10 red, 10 yellow, and 10 orange)  
1 paper bag per girl

Before the game starts, sprinkle all the colored squares in a field, hiding them a bit to make sure they are not all easily found.

Tell the girls that they are being part of a food chain.

Divide the girls into 3 groups: grasshoppers, rats and hawks. There are 3 grasshoppers for every rat and 3 rats for every hawk. (example: a group of 26 girls would have 2 hawks, 6 rats and 18 grasshoppers.)  Label the different groups with different colored arm bands.

Hand each 'grasshopper' a  paper bag which will represent their stomach.

Give the girls their instructions:  The grasshoppers hunt for food first. Hawks and Rats are to watch quietly on the side like good predators!  Grasshoppers have 30 seconds to collect food in their "stomachs".  Then the rats get to hunt grasshoppers for 30 seconds, while the grasshoppers continue to hunt for food, while the hawks watch.  When a rat touches a grasshopper, it is caught and "eaten" by giving it's "stomach" to the rat.  (Then the eaten grasshopper sits on the side and watches the rest.)  Then the hawks get to hunt the rats for 30 seconds while the rats continue to hunt for grasshoppers and the grasshoppers continue to hunt for food. At the end of that 30 seconds all the grasshoppers, rats and hawks bring their "stomachs" to the side and sit down.

Tell the girls that there is "pesticide" in the environment. The pesticide was sprayed in order to prevent crop damage by the grasshoppers. This pesticide is one that accumulates in food chains and stays in the environment for a long time. Tell the girls that the red pieces of paper is food that was sprayed with pesticide. All grasshoppers not eaten by the rats are now dead anyway if they ate any food with pesticide. Any rat with more than half of its food sprayed with pesticide is dead also. The hawk with the most food sprayed with pesticide doesn't die but since it has accumulated so much pesticide in its body the next eggs produced will be so thin that the eggs will not be able to hatch. No other hawks are affected THIS TIME. 


 -  Put chairs into a circle facing each other, one for each girl.  Have the girls sit in the chairs, and go around the circle and assign each girl a fruit, alternating between apples, bananas, peaches and pears. Stand in the center and call out a fruit.  Each girl that is assigned that fruit has to get up and change places with another girl of the same fruit.  Every now and then call out more than one fruit, or yell FRUIT BASKET and everyone must change places. The last girl in the chair must be the caller for the next round.


NIGHT SEARCH RELAY  -  Items needed:  
1 index sized card per girl.
reflecting tape
3 flashlights

This game is to be done at night or in a completely dark room

Divide girls into 3 teams: the circles, the squares and the triangles. Cut reflecting tape into those shapes and put each girls shape on their card.  Take the cards and hide them where the girls can find them easily.  

Have the girls stand on the side in 3 lines, separated into their group.  At the GO command, the first girl from each group has to use their flashlight to find a card representing their group.  Once a girl finds one, they are to come back to their group and hand the flashlight to the next girl.  This is done until each girl gets a chance, but make note of who finishes first.  If a girl finds a card that isn't hers (wrong group), she is to leave it there, untouched.


ROCK, ROCK  -  Items needed:  A small rock.

The girls sit in a circle close enough to easily hold hands.  One person stands in the middle and tries to find the rock.  One girl starts with the rock in one hand and everyone in the circle does the movements and sings the song.  

The movements:  To the beat of the song, with closed fists, hit your hands together, then hit them to the hands of the girls on each side of you.  Repeat this passing the rock to each other when you get it without the person in the middle figuring out who has it.

The song:  
Rock Rock, how I wander, 
from one hand in to the other,
is it fair? Is it fair?
To keep poor ??? standing there.  (fill in the ??? with the girl's name in the middle)

This game takes lots of practice passing that rock without being seen, as you only have one beat of the music to do it in!


SALLY SCOUT  -  Items needed: Cut Sally, a paper doll figure, out of card stock.

Sit Sally in a chair and introduce her to the girls.  Say something nice about her, and someone not so nice, such as she wears weird clothes.  When you say this, tear off a piece of her, such as half of her arm.  Have each girl say one thing that is nice about her, and one thing that isn't, and each time a negative thing is said, tear off another piece.  Once each girl has had a turn, tell them that now that they have torn her apart, they must put her back together again.  Once Sally is in one piece again, explain to them that the scars will never fully heal, even if they are on the inside.

TOILET PAPER GAME  -  Items needed:  
1 roll of toilet paper

This is great to use as a "getting to know you" activity.  We did it at my first Service Unit meeting!

Pass the roll of toilet paper around, telling each person to take as much as she feels she needs.  Don't tell them anything else.  When everyone has taken at least one square, tell them that they are to take turns telling something about themselves, one thing for each square taken! 


 -  Items needed:
1 sheet of paper and pencil for every two girls
1 garbage bag

twice as many items as their are girls that DO NOT belong in nature (such as a napkin, a drink bottle,etc)

Place items around a hiking trail, making most of them non-obvious.  Have the girls stay with their buddies and walk the trail.  They are to write down the items they see without touching them or pointing them out to anyone else.  At the end of the hike take the girls papers and lead them back down the trail pointing out the litter and have them pick it up and put it into the garbage bag.  Once done give the girls back their papers and let them compare how much they found and how much they missed.


UNIQUITY  -  Have the girls stand in a circle. Taking turns, each girl must tell one thing about themselves or their experiences that they think is unique. If no one else shares the experience or characteristic, the girl gets to sit down.  If another girl has had the same experience, the girl remains in the outer circle. Keep going from girl until all girls are seated.  This game will show how we may think that we don't share certain characteristics, when in different ways we really do.




This game was sent to us via a Girl Scout email chain letter.  The source is unknown, but it's such a great activity that we had to include it here!  If anyone knows who it originated with, we would love to give them credit!

Your family has decided that they can no longer live in Canada. There are no jobs and the prospect of finding jobs in very slim. Your family has discussed where to move to and because one of your neighbors moved to India last year and was able to find a job the decision has been made to move your family to India. They have chosen you to go ahead, find a job and someplace for them to stay and they will follow you in about 6 months. The day has arrived for you to leave and you have said your good-byes to your family and friends and are now seated on the airplane waiting for take off. The person sitting beside you says: "Is this your first trip to India? You reply, "Yes" and the person says " what do you know about India?"

1. Write three things you say:

You have a very smooth flight to India, when you arrive at Customs, you hand your passport to the Customers Officer, he shakes his head, says something you do not understands, points over to another Officer and you have to haul all your stuff over there you do not understand anything they are saying to you.

2. What do you feel?

They finally appear to be satisfied with your passport and you are allowed out into the people filled airport. You look all around and cannot see anyone that even looks vaguely familiar. The family who moved here last year are suppose to be here to pick you up. You cannot find them.

3. What do you feel?

You have waited two hours and you no idea what you should do. You just sit and wait. You look around you at the people in their strange clothes, with their strange language that you cannot understand.

4. What do you feel as you look and listen?

People seem to be looking at you strangely and you begin to worry about what to do if these people do not come soon. As the people look at you...

5. What do you think they are thinking?

The family you have been waiting for finally arrive, full of explanations as to why they are late. They take you to their home, which is only a very small apartment and tell you that you are welcome to say there for a few days until you can find a job and a place to live.

They tell you that they know of a place that is hiring and that they will take you there the next day to see if you can get a job.

8. What kind of job do you expect to get?

The company says yes they will hire you and that you can start the next day. It is a shoe factory and you will be cutting out the leather for the tops of the shoes. You are to stand at a machine which has very sharp blades and if you do not move the blade very accurately you ruin the leather and the shoe cannot be made and you could possibly cut yourself very severely. You are not sure that you understand exactly what to do as the person who explained your job did not speak English very well and was very hard to understand. You worked in an office back home and have never had to stand all day to work.

The other people in the factory are not very friendly and because you cannot speak their language you are finding it difficult to make any friends.

10. List your efforts:

You have been looking for a place to live, because there is not enough room for you at your friends. You have two choices. You can move in with a family who are from Canada or you can move in with an Indian family.

11. Which do you choose and why?

You are taking language classes at night and trying very hard to learn to speak their language but there are so many dialects that you find you cannot understand anything. You try very hard but feel you will never learn the new language. You get to work one morning and they tell you that they have made a rule that says you must speak their language and that you can no longer speak English at work.

Christmas is fast approaching, Your family will not be with you for Christmas but the family you live with is very friendly and will help you get through Christmas.
