Peg Binda-Foley , a former Stoneham Girl Scout Leader, is asking for our help. She coordinates volunteers for the St Patrick Food Group. They need volunteers to make sandwiches for the Community Dinners on the 3rd Weds night of every month in Malden. After dinner the people who are there, can take a sandwich home for lunch the next day. If you can volunteer your Troop, you would need to make them ahead of time and drop them off before they go on Weds .
This is an ongoing need and she has all date open from now (October) through the end of next year. This is a wonderful community service project for your Troop to do. My Troop has done it several times and the girls really enjoyed this way of helping out.
Suggestions on how to have your Troop participate in this community service.
You can have some people bring PB and others bring Jelly to the meeting. The troop can possibly get bread from the Pepperidge Farm store in Wakefield at a discount. The girls will have to wear gloves or really wash their hands good before you start. You put Peanut Butter on both sides of the bread first so the jelly will not leak through. Once the sandwich is made, you can make a cut almost through the sandwich so it will still stay together. You can put the fully made sandwiches back into the plastic bread loaf containers to keep them fresh. Then put them in either a shirt box or some larger box for storage and transport.
Once you make them, you need to deliver them t St Patrick's Rectory the night before (Tuesday) or the day they will be using them, and leave them down stairs in the basement of the rectory. You don't have to speak to them inside the rectory if you go during the day. There is a door, which is on the parking lot side of the rectory building directly next to the 3 car garage door, that is unlocked all day long. Go inside and go through the first outer room(storage) and put your boxes on a long table that is in the second room. The food group will pick them up and deliver them from there.
You should probably email Peg to let her know they are there once you deliver them too.
For questions or to volunteer, Peg has asked that you give her a call or email her. Her email address is mbindafoley@aol.com.
Her phone number is 781-438-4482.
Please give her a call if your Troop can supply the100 sandwiches. The Weds dates are below. Ideally a Troop would meet on a Tuesday to make them.
