Chapter 11: liquids

Chapter 11 General Instructional Objectives (GIOs)

Section 11.1. A molecular comparison of gases, liquids and solids.

1. Compare (how are they the same) and contrast (how are they different) solids, liquids and gases. Use table 11.1 and 11.2 to assist you.

Section 11.2. Intermolecular Forces

  1. Describe the three types of intermolecular attractive forces. Use this video to assist you. Don't get too bogged down into the details of the textbook--the video is the main source of information, but certainly read section 11.2 to assist.

  2. Compare and contrast intra- and inter- molecular forces.

  3. Explain the importance of hydrogen bonding, especially with regard to biological systems.

  4. Identify substances that can form hydrogen bonds. Sample exercise 11.1.

Section 11.3. Select Properties of Liquids

  1. Summarize (using particle models) how the properties of viscosity, surface tension and capillary action work. Use the figures in this section to assist you!

Section 11.4. Phase Changes

  1. Describe the six phase changes and identify each as endo- or exo- thermic.

  2. Interpret and create energy bar charts for phase changes.

  3. Interpet a heat curve i.e. when phase/thermal energy changes and what is occurring at each section of the curve.

  4. Define critical temperature, critical pressure and supercritical fluid.

Section 11.5. Vapor Pressure

  1. Define vapor pressure and dynamic equilibrium. Note: a particle model!!!

  2. Define volatile and identify liquids that are more or less volatile (hint: figure 11.25). Be able to complete sample exercise 11.4.

  3. Explain the relationship between boiling point and pressure. Hint: boiling water in the mountains v. sea level.

Section 11.6. Phase Diagrams

  1. Interpret a phase diagram. Figure 11.27 is key! Use sample exercise 11.5.

Lab 12: Heat of Solution and Fusion

  1. Calculate the molar heat changes in the dissolving process.
