Chemistry

Chemistry is the study of matter and at S-O, chemistry is an integrated science course designed to give students an opportunity to learn about and experience how the physical and chemical world works.  

Students will study five major topics in the course:  the elements (atomic structure, periodicity and bonding), energy changes involving matter (physical, nuclear and chemical), measuring quantities, force interactions (electromagnetism and gravity) and chemistry's impact on society (drugs and medicine and materials for society).  

The course combines key concepts from all science disciplines (biology, chemistry, earth science and physics) so that students understand the interconnected nature of science. This core course is intended to provide a solid foundation in chemical and physical sciences for students, as required by the Iowa Core content standards.
