Chapter 13-14: Transcription/Translation/Gene Expression

General Instructional Objectives (GIOs)

CHAPTER 13

Section 13.1. Understand the form and function of a gene.

Section 13.2. Explain how the 'mystery of DNA' was revealed through studies in the 1950s.

Section 13.3. Understand the components of DNA and their arrangement.

a. Be able to interpret and create a model of DNA.

b. using the adage, "structure = function," explain why DNA is shaped the way it is and how it functions.

c. Describe and diagram how DNA is replicated.

Section 13.4. Explain how mutations are created and their impact on a living organism.

a. explain the difference between inheritable and noninheritable diseases.

b. explain what a mutation is and how they form.

c. Explain the critical role mutations have in evolution...we'll learn more about this in the evolution chapter, but this is where you forge an important link between genetics and evolution

CHAPTER 14

Section 14.1. Explain the structure of proteins and the role of amino acids in protein formation.

Section 14.2-14.4. Describe and diagram the steps of protein translation.

Section 14.5. Describe mechanisms of genetic regulation.

a. define human genome.

b. provide examples of how genetic regulation is maintained.

c. differentiate between introns and extrons.

d. explain the evolutionary 'purpose' of so-called "junk DNA".

e. Provide an explanation for why complexity in organisms increases with the amount of DNA that is non-coding (figure 14.17)
