SEASON XV
SO MUCH IN STORE ... JOIN IN!
Shorewood Drama Junior turns 15 this year. To celebrate this milestone, we are adding some extra classes, hosting an alumni reunion, and planning some other fun surprises for those of you who have been, or currently are, a part of this organization. We thank you for your devotion and enthusiasm for our program. Because of all of you we able to say...
ALUMNI SOCIAL HOUR
If you have ever participated in a Shorewood Drama Jr. production,
we are planning a party for you this summer!
This summer, at the start of our 15th season, we are presenting the MTI musical, Matilda Jr., based on the Tony-winning Broadway musical and Roald Dahl’s classic children’s novel. The story of a magical little girl who finds refuge and strength in reading and storytelling, is the perfect selection to celebrate fifteen years of magical storytelling, produced by the amazing children, over 450, who have participated in Drama Jr.
To honor those of you who have participated, we invite you to come for a Drama Jr. Alumni Social Hour, prior to our opening night performance on Saturday, July 22nd at 6:00 pm in the lobby of the Barbara Gensler auditorium on the Shorewood High School campus. See old friends, peruse memorabilia from your shows, and see how Drama Jr. has blossomed, all thanks to your participation. Whether you were one of the pioneers who helped to get this program off the ground in the early years, or if you were a “one and done” kid, or a summer regular, or someone who did every (or nearly every) show you possibly could, we’d love to see you.
TWO NEW CLASSES
Kids do not get enough exposure to plays in their English & Language Arts classes. Furthermore, many times their first plays read in those classes are Shakespeare which are dense, with language difficulties, and lead kids to want nothing to do with any plays. Exposure to classics that are age appropriate; including adaptations of childrens’ literature and previous Drama Junior plays, can help them appreciate this often neglected area of theatre, as musicals are more popular with young people. And reading plays helps strengthen reading skills, public speaking, critical thought, and social awareness.
Two sections planned; one per semester. Class would meet after school, once a month. Stay tuned for more details
Students sign up to help write the second half of our spring show, The Adventures of Nebraska Smith, a parody of the Indiana Jones film franchise. These budding playwrights will collaborate on another short play with the same characters as Nebraska Smith and the Mysteries of History’s Future, the other play we will perform during the spring production, first seen in our 2013 show Time Flies When You're Having Fun. Students will brainstorm and workshop the plot, write the rough draft. They will learn how to create dialogue, format playwriting, edit, proofread; and finally hold a table read and receive constructive criticism from invited guests.
This class would be weekly, after school in the month of January. Stay tuned!
