During the rehearsal process of Matilda Jr. (summer 2023,) our budding actors learned a lot in a very short amount of time. They learned the songs from their musical director and were taught their choreography by the choreographer. They received their blocking (exits, entrances, and how they move or are positioned on stage) from the director. Being that busy you'd think actors never have an unscheduled minute. But they do... many of them.
That summer we revived and revamped an acting education series of lessons first used in previous shows like Pop Goes the World (spring 2014) and Disney's Peter Pan (summer 2018,) where small groups of actors, when not needed for musical or dance rehearsals or not working with the director on a scene on stage, meet with a teacher or high school drama mentor (or both) and explore some topics that enrich their acting experience and abilities.
As of summer 2025 there are 8 different acting workshop sessions:
Stage Terminology
Parts of the Stage
Character Research & Development
Creating Character with Your Body
Creating Character with Your Voice
Memorization Tips
Stage Business
Overcoming Stage Fright
Most of these lessons involve a variety of activities from word puzzle and physical improv games, to relaxation techniques and wacky vocal exercises, to fun worksheets and art projects that let actors use their wild imaginations. We encourage kids to ask lots and lots of questions and hope for important and meaningful discussions on these topics and others. And through it all, the spirit of collaboration is strengthened and connections between cast members are made.
