* creating publicity needs and coordinating the ushers
* keeping the show running smoothly while moving scenery
* managing the show, the actors & the crew
below are descriptions of some of the different responsibilities
found in the various technical theatre areas
TECHNICAL AREA
SOME OF THE RESPONSIBILITIES
Act as a contact person between the director and the cast and crew
Help with auditions
Be on book (script) during rehearsals to prompt actors, record the blocking of actors, props, scenery/costume changes, etc.
Take notes at production meetings and technical rehearsals
In charge of the "Production Bible" (the big book with all the information about the production)
Cares for (cleans, sweeps) the deck (floor) of the set
Meets with the Technical Director (and possibly the Scenic Designer) to begin the building process
Builds the set, any furniture or props (set pieces) needed for the production: including painting
Learn the names and proper use of tools
Abides by and enforces safety rules in the shop area
Helps to strike of the set, etc. after the production is over
Creates costume plot for what costume pieces are needed, by which actor and when
Meets with Costume Designer as to what costumes can be pulled from storage, what must be bought, what must be built
Sewing, ironing, craftwork, repairs, labeling and maintenance of costumes
Helps actors as a dresser with quick changes (during the performances) and pre-setting costume pieces (before the performance)
Strike costumes during the strike of the show
Style and maintain any wigs used in the production
Inventory the make-up
Make shopping list of make-up needs
Clean and organize make-up
Help apply make-up during run
Strike the make-up and wigs during the strike of the show
Read the play, create a plot as to when, where and what is needed in the area of hand/scenic properties
Pull props from theatre storage or build any of the items on the properties list
Make a shopping list of props not found in storage or those not able to be built
Meet with any staff members concerning props (lighting props; stage combat specialist/weapons, etc.)
Create props checklists for each of the actors
Check that actors have pre-set their props before the start of the show
Strike properties and scenery during the strike of the show
Develop a cue list of lighting effects or cues mentioned in the script
Help the Lighting Designer and the Master Electrician during technical rehearsal in the hanging and set up of lighting fixtures
Act as stand-ins during technical rehearsals, to help lighting designer to angle and focus lighting fixtures
Help strike lighting instruments during the strike of the show
Develop a cue list of sound effects and required music mentioned in the script
Work with the Sound Engineer to set up equipment during technical rehearsal
Maintain a checklist of microphones used by actors
Help with sound checks
Create posters and flyers advertising the production
Distribute posters
Create, gather information (cast, crew lists, biographies, director's notes, etc.)
Design, print and fold programs for the production
Take the head shot photographs
Decorate the "lobby" of the theatre space (head shots, etc.)
Coordinate the house manager & ushers
Strike the lobby and clean the "house" (auditorium) after the production
Work to make the performance run smoothly
Move scenery, furniture, and large props during the run of the show
Help with any sound or light needs during the technical rehearsals
