A NOVEL APPROACH
A NOVEL APPROACH
Ms. Sara B. Van Loon, Shorewood Drama Jr.'s artistic director and founder, is also the troupe's resident playwright. Nearly every play, musical revue, sketch show, and jukebox musical Shorewood Drama Jr. has performed since its inception was written or adapted by Sara.
Now she is taking one of those plays, originally titled Painted Wings and Giant Strings and Other Fancy Stuff, a play about the origins of Imaginary Friends, inspired by the song "Puff the Magic Dragon," and is turning it into a children's novel. She's entered this year's NaNoWriMo contest.
NaNoWriMo stands for the National Novel Writing Month. It's an international writing organization that holds a contest every November. It challenges those who enter to write a 50,000-word novel by the end of the month. (for more information about NaNoWriMo see below)
This is a daunting task, but Ms. Van Loon did it before in 2012 (she also tried and didn't finish in 2013 and 2014.) But if she finishes by the deadline, the novel will be printed and bound and five copies of the book will be given to Ms. Van Loon (free of charge) as her prize for reaching her goal.
