Shorewood Drama Jr.'s favorite adventurer returns!
In the spring of 2012, Shorewood Drama Jr. produced its ninth show, Saturday Afternoon at the Bijou: Matinee Memories. The show was a recreation of a day at the movies, as it may have been in the early half of the 20th century, when kids paid a nickel and spent hours in a dark theatre. We reenacted newsreels (how people got their news before TV,) a serial (the grandmother of today’s soap operas,) a cartoon, a comedy short, a snipe (a short ad,) a feature film, and six coming attractions (previews.) One of those previews was a spoof or parody of Raiders of the Lost Ark, the first installation in the Indiana Jones™ franchise. Our version was entitled Nebraska Smith and the Marauders of the Mysterious Shrine. It was a favorite with both the players and the audience. So, for the fall 2013 show, Time Flies When You’re Having Fun, our hero returned in a one-act play, along with two other plays about time travel. This version was entitled Nebraska Smith and the Mystery of History’s Future. Our first one act of The Adventures of Nebraska Smith will be a revival of that previous play.
History professor and adventurer Nebraska Smith is off on another quest. Nebraska, with the help of his wife Marianne, his son Moose, father Dr. Harry Smith Sr., and other friends and family from all his previous adventures, must travel the globe and through time to find the notorious French archeologist Dr. Gruyere Bordeaux. They will battle historical troublemakers all over the map to uncover Bordeaux’s dastardly plans, masterminded by his wealthy backer, the menacing Japanese businessman, Mr. Sashimi Saki and the cunning Soviet physicist, Dr. Blini Vodkarov. Can Nebraska and his gang halt them from stealing historical riches? Can they foil their plan to take over the universe? Or will time and history be against Nebraska as he tries to stop Bordeaux, Saki and Vodkarov from becoming the most powerful people in 1938? That is the Mystery of History’s Future.
This spring (2024) we will continue the Drama Junior saga of our favorite adventurer, Nebraska Smith, with another one-act play, which will be authored by the members of the Budding Playwrights’ Workshop, who will meet the entire month of January to craft this second play. Check back after January 2024 to find out more about this newest adventure of Nebraska Smith!
