We’re pleased to have Dr. Jack Chen (MBB) and Payman Nickchi (PhD candidate, STATS)

Constructing Platinum Quality Reference Genomes for Research and Applications” - Dr. Jack Chen

Recent advances in DNA sequencing technology have made reconstructing genomes less and less of a daunting task. Longer sequencing reads and more accurate reconstruction methods have allowed researchers to produce more “platinum quality” vetebrate genomes, facilitating better studies about ourselves and other animals.

Applications of Gene Geaneologies in Finding Diseases” - Payman Nickchi

Mutations in our DNA, including disease causing ones, accumulate over time. If we know what ancestral mutations play a role in a disease, we can better understand how to treat them. Payman aims to computationally “look back in time” to predict previous mutations given a set of more recent ones.

Also, look for upcoming information about the Beta test of the Bioinformatics Help Desk run by Compute Canada. This will be a resource for bioinformaticians to get advice from both peers and experts in the field, and even get one-on-one support! Information about how to join the beta test will be posted soon.

See you next time!
