[Feb 22, 2018] Genomics: the Promise and Reality

Post date: Mar 18, 2018 8:30:03 PM

This month we were happy to have Dr. Ben Koop, out from the University of Victoria! Dr. Koop is currently involved in a huge project that sequenced the salmon genome, but his lab also takes a highly multidisciplinary approach to looking everything from genes involved in the immune system, molecular evolution, and bioinformatics.

We had a great open discussion with Dr. Koop about his career path, his thoughts on the future, and all the science in between. Topics ranged from what ares of research the NIH is focusing on in the next 20 years, how technology can make a huge difference in our research (if it works), and how we need to take a more holistic view of our world (e.g. the interplay between the genome, phenotype, and the environment)

See you next month!
