ResearchDay2019

The SFU Omics research day is an opportunity to showcase the great omics research happening at SFU. This full day event will feature oral presentations, poster presentations, and a keynote presentation about data-driven biology and the interdisciplinary fields that stem from it. This event is open to SFU students, staff, faculty, and alumni.

Time + Place:

Thursday January 10th, 2019 at the Big Data Hub. Opening remarks at 9:00am. Sign-in/registration starts at 8:30am*

Presentations:

Throughout the day, there will be different presentations showcasing Omics research.

If you would like to share your omics research with the SFU community, you have two options:

(1) Oral presentation - These talks will be 10 minutes long, with additional time allotted for questions.

(2) Poster presentation - Posters will be displayed throughout the day and there will be a designated poster session.

We would love to have everyone that is doing omics research at SFU present at our Research Day. However, if we receive more abstract submissions than available spots, abstracts will be judged and ranked to select the

On top of expected criteria, such as clarity, relevance, and impact, we will try our best to ensure that there is a diversity in the chosen talks. Specifically, since omics is heavily interdisciplinary, we will try to ensure that there is a fair representation across the spectrum of disciplines.

If you are offered an oral or poster presentation, we will notify you by December 13th, 2018 and provide more details.

Abstract Submissions:

The deadline for abstract submissions is EXTENDED TO Wednesday December 5th, 2018 at 11:59PM.

Note: If you missed the abstract deadline (Dec 5th) and still want to show-off your research, email us at sfu-omics-organizers@sfu.ca.

To present an oral or poster presentation at the omics research day, please submit your abstract here:

There is a 2000 character limit on the abstracts.

Keynote:

"Bringing omics to evolution and evolution to omics"

Dr. Casey Dunn (Website)

Dr. Casey Dunn is a professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Yale University and author of "Practical Computing for Biologists". At the center of his research is the diversity of life and the key role evolution plays in it. He uses a combination of field, laboratory, and computational work to explore unique organisms, such as deep-sea creatures, and evolutionary relationships. Outside of his research, he created CreatureCast, which is a cartoon series about science that is supported by the National Science Foundation and featured in the New York Times.

Reception:

The reception is going to be a great opportunity for you to learn about the different types of careers that can be pursued in omics! A short panel session will kick-off the reception. This will be followed by a more open networking session where you can meet and talk to many interesting people with careers across many different areas. Check back here for more information.
