[Oct 25, 2018] SFU Omics Group 16th Meeting - Tracking Down Disease Genes

Post date: Nov 15, 2018 11:30:05 PM

For our 16th meeting, Dr. Martin Ester (Prof, Comp Sci, SFU) and our own Justin Jia (Brinkman lab, MBB) shared their interesting work using big genomic datasets to improve our understanding of human disease.

Big data driven analysis of antimicrobial resistance gene mobility trends” - Justin Jia

Antimicrobial resistance is on the rise. Understanding where the genes behind antimicrobial resistance are located in the bacterial genome is one big step towards finding alternative treatment options.

Machine learning for precision oncology” - Dr. Martin Ester

Applying machine learning to the ever increasing amount of genomic data fuels the development of more personalized forms of cancer treatment. These techniques allow for a “stratified” approach to treatment, where patients are group based on the shared targets for treatment.

Cheers!
