Backgrounder

“Based on a True Story”.

Omics Crisis at SFU:

At SFU, there is nothing analogous to an “Omics Department”. Since the people doing Omics research are split up among many different departments, there is no clear way for researchers, especially students, to come together and discuss similar issues that they may be facing in their research. It is difficult to get insight from peers that have relevant expertise and might offer answers or new approaches that the student would not have known about otherwise. The success of "Omics" research is highly dependent on collaboration and communication between people who have relevant expertise. We want to help facilitate that.

Secret Society of Bioinformagicians:

We wanted to bring together the "small" group of people interested in Omics at SFU. However, the more we looked, the more we found that there were many Omics researchers and students at SFU. They were just hiding in the many different relevant departments, including Computing Science, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, Biology, Statistics, Health Science, Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology, and Math. So, our goal has become to bring this secret society out of hiding and foster an active and collaborative community.

Goals and Purpose

We hope to provide an environment for students and other academics to come together to talk about their work related to omics, bioinformatics, and data analysis of biological data. This group is meant for people at all stages of the learning curve. You can come and share questions about your research and/or help others with their research questions.

Who We Are

We are a group of students at SFU that want to help the SFU community learn and share their knowledge about bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and all-the-omics. Check out the Organizers page for more info.
