CA 5.1A Horizontal and Vertical Shifts

Objectives: To recognize graphically and symbolically a horizontal or vertical shift.

Preliminaries/Lead-In:

Suggested Procedures: I expect this activity to take a whole 50 min class period as it takes them quite a while to create all the graphs and I prefer not to rush them through this stage. This is a Mathematica investigation but it is pretty guided - they are told which functions to use and which shifts to make. I will check as a whole class that they are coming to the correct conclusions in 4 and 9 and that they have completed 5, 10, 11 and 12 correctly. They run into trouble on Q11a where we ask them to test their conjectures and I usually have to explain to them that this means going back to the statements they made about shifts and seeing if these statements are true for this function. I am going to have them hand in the last page of this activity (just tear it off and write their name on it) - this is the question which asks them to do a vertical and horizontal shift to the same graph.

Wrap-Up/Take-Away:

Possible Homework: Last page - Q12
