Objectives: Students will discover the effects of the various parameters of an exponential function on the shape of the graphs of the functions.
Preliminaries/Lead-In:
Suggested Procedures: This is one of our most open activities - we ask them to compare different exponential functions but don't tell them which functions to choose - some students are very confused about how to get a specific function from the general form but this is good confusion for them to encounter. I will let them work in small groups on 1 but once I see that all groups are through that one I will pull them back together for 2 to make sure that everyone is reaching the correct characteristics. Similarly with 3 and 4. Then I will send them home with Problem 2 and Problem 3 if we have not gotten as far as them in class.
Wrap-Up/Take-Away:
Possible Homework: I will send them home with Problem 2 and Problem 3 if we have not gotten as far as them in class.
