A Guide to the Indian Tribes of the Pacific Northwest (2013) has phonetic spellings of most tribes in Oregon, including several of the ones below. We have not yet found pronunciation guides to other names. In those cases, we've provided our best guesses based on readings of Kalapuyan words in several contexts, but they are not necessarily all correct. See the notes below each name.
Kalapuya
Ka-luh-POO-ya
Atfalati
at-FALL-uh-tee
The stress is on the second syllable. It is not AT-fuh-LAH-tee
It should rhyme with Tuality ... tu-ALL-uh-tee / at-FALL-uh-tee.
There's a nice recording of linguist Henry Zenk (who is the most knowledgeable living person about Kalapuyan languages) saying "Atfalati" here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_y8rZSa6pc
Chelamela
Cheh-luh-MEH-luh
The e's are like the "e" in bet, which I've spelled above as "eh"
The a's are like the "u" in but, which I've spelled above as "uh"
The main stress is on the third syllable, which I've capitalized. The secondary stress is on the first syllable.
Ahantchuyuk
uh-HAHN-chee-yuk
Stress on the second syllable
About the "chee": Next to the -yuk, we bet it's pronounced a lot like euil in French, if you speak French.
Chafan
This isn't listed in the source above. We're guessing it's supposed to be similar to: CHAH-fun. (An alternate spelling I've seen is Chafin, which makes me think the emphasis is on the first syllable, and the second syllable has minimal pronunciation of the vowel... but this is just an educated guess)
Winefelly
Also not in the source above. We can only guess: Win-uh-FELL-ee. (This may well be incorrect!)
