The best places to look for pictures, in order of preference, are:
Pacific University Archives Online Exhibits
Includes thousands of scans of items from Pacific's Archives collections, such as materials from the Gov. Atiyeh collection, the Community Action collection, etc.; as well as thousands of items scanned for partner institutions as part of the WashingtonCountyHeritage.org project.
Notes on getting copies:
Low-resolution images (and sometimes high-resolution as well) can be downloaded by clicking through on the image on the website, and then right-clicking to save.
High-resolution images of items that cannot be downloaded directly from our web site are saved with File Names matching their Identifiers (e.g. "PUApic_008615") on Box under Archives > Archives Digital Masters. If you can't find the high-resolution scan, we can go back to the original photographs and re-scan:
Items with Identifiers beginning "PUApic_" are in the boxes on the shelves directly opposite the entry door to the back room of the archives.
Items with other Identifiers (e.g. PUA_MSX or PUA_MUS, etc.) are in their respective collections, which can be discovered by looking at the prefix on the Identifier; see File Names for more info
WashingtonCountyHeritage.org photographs not owned by Pacific University, e.g. photos that originally came from Five Oaks Museum, will need to be requested from the owning institution. See: https://heritage.lib.pacificu.edu/s/wcho/page/reproductions
Heart of Oak (yearbooks) : scattered years : 1900s-1980s
Good source of student portraits, 1900s-1980s. Yearbooks have not been scanned; they must be consulted by hand and then selected images scanned manually. Copies of all the yearbooks are stored in the back storage room near the sink cabinets. Yearbooks were not made every year; they stopped being made around the year 1990. What is on the shelf is a complete run of all existing yearbooks.
The Index (student newspaper): roughly 1930s-present
Good source of (grainy) photos of events during the school year, 1930s-present. Newspapers have not been scanned; they must be consulted by hand and then selected images scanned manually. Notes:
Be very careful with scanning. Putting newspapers on the scanner/copier can stress these fragile volumes and cause the pages to crack! Whenever possible, take photographs with a camera instead of using a scanner bed.
Bound archival copies are shelved along the wall near the entrance to the Archives
Recent issues are online at: http://www.pacindex.com/
Alumnews / Pacific University Magazine : 1960s-present
Hit-or-miss but sometimes has great stuff. This magazine contains articles written for alumni, so it tends to have good articles on big changes at the University, like incoming Presidents, new academic programs, etc.; and occasionally has good articles on specific students, events on campus, etc. Notes:
Most issues 1966-2001 are in bound volumes on the shelf next to the entrance to the Archives, above the newspapers
Additional non-bound issues 1966-present (often easier to scan) are in archival boxes in the back storage room under section 17B; see ArchivesSpace for accession records
The most recent issues are online at: https://magazine.pacificu.edu/archives/
If patrons have questions about recent articles/photographs, you can ask the magazine staff for assistance. https://magazine.pacificu.edu/staff/
Pacific University Flickr Stream : 2010-circa 2018
Albums created and maintained by our Marketing Department. Includes recent photographs of campus, student & alumni events, fundraising events, etc. Organized in chronological order into "Albums" that generally have to be browsed through; individual photographs are usually not captioned. For downloading/usage/permission of the these images, contact Marketing; see https://www.pacificu.edu/about-us/offices/marketing-communications/photography-multimedia
Unscanned Archival Sources - all dates
Items described in ArchivesSpace records can generally be pulled and scanned on request. Note that finding images in these collections often takes considerable manual searching.
Unindexed Slides, digital photo collections and miscellaneous : mostly 1970s-2000s
Thousands of non-indexed slides and digital photos created by our Marketing, Publicity, etc. programs exist in the Archives. They are unfortunately extremely difficult to use, because they are not indexed or organized, except very loosely by date and occasionally by broad topic, e.g. "Students." A large-scale digitization and description project would be necessary to make these truly accessible. For anyone who is extremely determined, the main collection groupings are:
Pacific University Slides Collection: Approximately 5,900 slides related to Pacific University. Most were probably taken by staff photographers. The bulk of the collection dates from the late 1970s through the early 1990s. These are in the greenish-blue slide drawers on top of the filing cabinets in the Archives.
Unprocessed slides, 1990s: Thousands of additional slides, loose in envelopes, stored in boxes on left hand side of the last row of the Archives Storage Room. These slides are in as-is condition as supplied to us by Marketing & Communications.
Unprocessed digital photos on CD-ROM / DVD - in Archives Storage room
Oversized Photographs: Some, but not all oversized photographs were scanned for WashingtonCountyHeritage.org. Un-scanned photos were generally kept in the Oversize File Drawers.
