The first Toby’s Run of the season was full of fun. Sunny skies and winds were in the high teens with gusts into the mid-twenties. Forecasts had predicted the winds to build from there. Five boats were up to the challenge, but only two fool hardy SJ24s were crazy enough to “go for it”. Others claimed the voice of reason elected to go back to the house due to the forecasts. The two SJ24s screamed out of the channel and on to Toby’s. Being even the whole way, Magic Juan was able to just get in front of Renaissance as the two sped for the dock under sail. Note - One of the only Toby’s Run rules are that you can’t use your motor to dock. Magic Juan stopped short, forcing Renaissance to make a move around and land 10 seconds later. A foot race ensued with both skippers sprinting down the docks, peeling off foul weather gear and forcing tourist to dart out of the way. Some spectators cheered the skippers as they raced on foot. By the time the skippers hit the street, the sprint slowed to a slow jog for the out of breath 40 year old men. Buys made it to Toby’s about 30 seconds in front of Steckman. Two Black and Tans were waiting at the bar for the racers. Both men gasping for air and trying to be the first to finish, Buys managed to finish his beer a half of glass before Steckman. This was by far the closest race yet! The rest of the crew wrangled the sail tattered boats and secured them before joining the skippers at Toby’s. A good time was had by all.
We’d like to host another Toby’s Run next month. Who’s in? You can follow the Viking chatter on the Facebook page. We will be racing Wednesday nights in November plus this Wednesday. Start times will be around 5:30 outside the breakwater. Skipper’s meeting @ 5pm on A dock. Bring your headlamps as it will be dark. Feel free to join us whether on your boat or jump on ours!
