Viking races are defined by only a few, simple rules, and are administered by the honor system (no committee). In the event of a failure of the honor system, the offending Viking(s) will be keelhauled (or worse) at the Founder's discretion.
Non-Vikings are invited and wholly welcome to join the fun.
Unless otherwise noted, there are no entry fees in Viking races.
Viking races don't use the PHRF system. If you cross the finish line first, you've won. We don't care what you sail, so long as it is a mono-hull. If the PHRF rating of your vessel is obscenely low, it will mean more glory when we win (San Juan 24s typically have a 231 rating).
Starts will be accomplished with a minimum of a 3 minute countdown. A horn, whistle, loud person, or howler monkey will announce the start of the sequence, with a tone for each minute past, including the actual start. A Viking racer will agree to take on this responsibility before each race.
Early crosses of the starting line require the offending boat to again pass through the starting line with her full length.
Only referenced marks count. A Captain may, at his or her discretion, ignore hazards or channel markers of any sort. You will only be severely laughed at for running aground.
Once a race starts it can only be canceled by mutual agreement of the leading skipper and another participating vessel. If a race is canceled, it is the responsibility of the parties to the cancellation to inform every participating vessel.
Boat traffic or unforeseen hindrances have no bearing in Viking races. These risks are the same for all racers, and hence, they are equal and fair. It will be deemed that Odin frowned upon any such unlucky boat.
All participants are required to review the Race Disclosure, available in the Files section.
Unless otherwise agreed upon, the 2009-2012 ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) shall be in effect for all other matters.
