Substandard Courses

Don't look for these races in the ISAF rule book.

  • The Toby's Run- Standard Viking start line, no requirement to take G11 to port, to Coupeville Wharf. Captain must then depart boat, proceed to Toby's tavern, and consume either a Black & Tan or fountain drink of his or her choice on the premises- no ice allowed. Participants that do not consume the tasty beverage will receive a DNF. Vessel may dock at wharf or the Captain may simply be dropped off by the crew. As in any sailboat race, no motoring is allowed- not even for docking at the wharf.

  • Dance With The Lady- Standard Viking start and finish lines, no requirement to take G11 to port, take R2 at Utsalady Point to port, then sail to the finish. This course is approximately 16 miles in length. Captains are strongly encouraged to dance with Utsa as they pass by. Many years ago a racer is presumed to have neglected to do so, and he was never seen again.

  • Raiding Drill- Standard Viking start line, but all boats begin at anchor, with anchor line secured by a cleat (not a cam cleat or just pinched in a horn cleat). Anchor must be resting on the bottom. Boats may have sails and sheets run, but the sails may not be raised until race start. Additionally, the requirement may be added that at each mark the crew rotates positions. Both or either of these provisions can be added to any of the Standard Courses.

  • Assjackwards- Fondly named after this race's brilliant creator, Jack Robinson, this race is to be conducted stern first, under motor. The course most likely would consist of standard start and finish lines, taking G11 to port.
