The Instrumental Audition is comprised of 2 Parts:
Scales
Prepared Solos
Scales
All scales are to be memorized. Fall 2025 Audition scales are E flat major, D major and Chromatic. Scales are NOT concert pitch (tenor sax will play their E flat scale; trombone will play their e flat scale, etc.)
All wind instruments will perform the following scales from memory up to four flats and four sharps.
All wind instruments will perform the chromatic scale from memory
All scales should be performed full range of the instrument as capable of the player
All major scales are to be tongued and played at quarter note=120
The scales for the 2025-2026 Auditions are E-flat, D and Chromatic.
Prepared Solos
Band students on wind instruments have a four-year rotating list of audition music that reflects the All State Audition. Please note:
All students must have original audition materials in their possession at the time of their audition
All wind auditions will perform the following:
Lyrical Etude B ("Vocalise"):
Measure 1 to the downbeat of Measure 22.
This will be performed at the notated tempo.
Technical Etude (B)
Measure 1 to Measure 22 (the caesura).
Students will be able to perform the except of the Technical Etude in the following tempo range: Quarter Note = 90-110.
Flute players who wish to be considered for piccolo parts will perform the Trio from "Stars and Stripes Forever' in addition to the regular flute audition requirements (this does not change from year to year).
PERCUSSIONISTS: TECHNICAL ETUDE: All parts are 32 measures so they can be rehearsed with the winds. Each instrument (snare, timpani and xylophone) will only audition on the measures of the piece marked with START and STOP.
