Audition Materials and Information
The Band Audition is comprised of 3 Parts:
Scales
Sight Reading
Prepared Solo
Scales:
All scales are to be memorized. 2023 audition scales will be F major, A Major, and Chromatic
All wind instruments will perform the following scales from memory up to four flats and four sharps.
All wind instruments will perform the chromatic scale from memory
All scales should be performed full range of the instrument as capable of the player
All major scales are to be tongued and played at quarter note=120
Treble clef euphonium players use the trumpet scale sheet
All percussionists will be asked to play scales
Sight Reading
Keys will be one of the following: concert F, E flat, A flat, G, or C (Not B flat).
Simple meter 2/4, 3/4, 4/4
Whole, dotted half, half, quarter, eighth, and dotted quarter notes and rests
Ties
Repeat sign
Tempo markings will be chosen from the following: Allegro, Largo, Andante, Moderato, Adagio, Vivace,
Dynamic markings may include pp, p, mp, mf, f, ff, cresc., decresc,
Articulations may include slurs, tonguing, staccato, legato, accents
Additionally, flutes, clarinets, trumpets, saxes will include: sixteenth notes in various patterns and dotted eighth notes
Prepared Solo
Prepared Solo
Band students have a four-year rotating list of audition music that reflects the All State Audition. Please note:
All students must have original audition materials in their possession at the time of their audition
All wind auditions will perform the All State Lyric Etude
All wind auditions will perform a pared down version of the All State Technical Etudes (see below for cuts)
Flute players who wish to be considered for piccolo parts will perform the Trio from "Stars and Stripes Forever' in addition to the regular flute audition requirements (this does not change from year to year).
Percussion plays:
Designated etude from Tanner (Eight (+ 4) Three Minute Solos for Multiple Percussion, by Peter Tanner, published by Studio 4 Music)
Designated solo from Whaley (Audition Etudes for Snare Drum, Timpani, Keyboard Percussion and Multiple Percussion - by Garwood Whaley, Meredith Music Publications)
