D3 High School Choral
Audition Materials and Information
The Choral Audition Has 3 Parts:
Scale
Sing Backs
Prepared Solo
Scales
Students will prepare a one Octave scale: Bb Major for Alto and Bass, and F Major for Soprano and Tenor.
The scale should be performed at Quarter Note = 60, and sung using any syllables of the student’s choice (solfege, numbers, la) . The sections below show the rhythmic pattern the scale should be performed with.
Singers will be given I-IV-V-I chords (see below), then "do" before they sing the scale.
Below you will find an audio file for both the Scale and Preparation Chords for each vocal part.

Sing Backs
Sing Backs are three note phrases that will be played for students auditioning which they will immediately sing back. The buttons below link to Google Drive Folders, which contain 15 examples by voice part. You will find these as individual examples, a complete track of all 15, and a PDF representative of each of the 15 examples. The Sing Backs chosen for the auditions will be pulled from this pool.
Prepared Solo
Chorus students have a four-year rotating list of audition music for their prepared solo piece.
The District 3 Prepared Solos are pulled from "Twenty-Four Italian Songs and Arias" Medium High (for Sopranos and Tenors) and Medium Low (for Altos and Basses) Books and accompanying CDs. The CDs contain the accompaniments used at the audition. You will use this every year for All State and District auditions. (Click the links above for a purchasing link).
As in the All State audition, the art songs should be performed WITHOUT ornaments.
