Pit Ponies - Jamage Colliery

The following photograph shows three pit ponies that were rescued from an underground explosion after 21 days of entrapment.

The reverse of the photo is endorsed in the handwriting of Walter Clifford's daughter Mabel. Subsequent research however has now proven the picture to relate to the underground explosions which took place on 25 December 1911 at the Jamage Colliery, Talke, Newcastle-under-Lyme. 6 men and 27 ponies perished in the explosions.
