The George Medal

The George Medal was instituted, by Royal Warrant, on 24 September 1940. It addressed the need to reward people in all walks of life. However the authorities maintained that the George Cross should retain it's position as the 'civilian Victoria Cross' and should not be undermined by the award of large numbers. The George Medal, or GM, was therefore introduced as a 'junior' to the George Cross.
