Career History

Captain Sanders currently serves as the Director of Safety, Environmental Compliance and Emergency Management for Federal Occupational Health, Program Support Center, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration, where he oversees department-wide safety, environmental compliance and emergency response policy in the department’s only non-appropriated, shared services provider and supports strategic business growth and management initiatives.

He is also the acting Chief of Safety for the Department of Health and Human Services and is responsible for regulatory oversight related to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Meanwhile, in his role as the Chief Scientist for USPHS, Captain Sanders supports the Office of the Surgeon General in developing and implementing strategic health policies and in leading the USPHS Commissioned Corps in recruitment, readiness, retention, mentoring, and other strategic policy areas.

A U.S. Army veteran, he had served many roles in the military, including chief biological threat assessment and chief intelligence officer for the 520th Theater Army Medical Laboratory. He was an executive committee member and senior editor for the 5th edition of “Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories,” receiving multiple decorations for his efforts.
