Whenever an accident or a similar untoward incident occurs in the workplace, more often it is the result of not just a single event, but a combination of many factors. Discussed here are the primary contributing factors to workplace health and safety hazards:

People

How people act in the workplace significantly affects their own health and safety, as well as those of their colleagues. The organization should ensure that personnel are well-trained, motivated, and competent in accomplishing their tasks. Communication also plays a key part in the prevention of accidents.

Equipment

These include the tools and machinery that people utilize to do their work, including fixed machines, hand tools, and protective equipment, among others. Equipment that are in proximity to a worker, even if he or she does not use it, can contribute to health and safety hazards.

Material

Materials used in the workplace include the raw materials for production and biological or chemical substances that could be hazardous to the health or property. These should be handled, stored, and disposed of properly.

Environment

The workplace environment can also be a hazard to employees. An organization should make sure that every surface that people walk on, work in, or place their things on is in good condition. Proper ventilation, lighting, and cleanliness are also necessary to keep the work environment as safe as possible.
