One of our members, Puan Fazliana penned a short story about her daughter Dalili, and her experiences being in school in Malaysia.
"A quick little story about Dalili’s school journey 🎒✨
Recently, Persatuan Epilepsi Malaysia invited us to share our journey with Eisai Malaysia. Walaupun kami tak dapat hadir, saya nak kongsikan sedikit tentang realiti kami sebagai ibu bapa yang membesarkan anak dengan epilepsi. For Dalili, schooling is not always as straightforward as it looks.
Epilepsy awareness in schools is not just about knowing what to do when a seizure happens. Ia juga tentang memahami anak itu sendiri, emotional triggers, sensory needs, limitations dan perkara-perkara yang mungkin mencetuskan seizure. Sometimes, inclusion means flexibility. Because every child is different, and sometimes the same approach simply doesn't work for everyone."
"Beyond Epilepsy - Together We Thrive"
Eisai (M) Sdn Bhd invited two of our members to their headquaters in Damansara for a special talk. The sharing session is a part of a long-term effort by Eisai to increase awareness and most importantly, to help launch a nationwide school awareness program in Malaysian schools.
Roc Shen Goh and Cadence Tan were excited to be a part of Eisai's initiative and to represent the epilepsy community. Thank you to both of them - for stepping up and speaking up for epilepsy. Our Vice-President, Dr. Khoo Ching Soong joined in via Zoom to represent PEM on the day.
Corporate and community initiatives need to work hand-in-hand in making sure the right needs of epilepsy patients can be addressed together. Thank you to Mr. Sathiya and Ms. Kam Ai Teng (MD) of Eisai (M) Sdn Bhd, for the warm invitation and collaboration opportunity.

This year in conjunction with International Epilepsy Day, #EpilepsyPledge invites individuals, families, workplaces, schools and organizations to commit to a concrete action throughout 2026 that will strengthen awareness, safety, inclusivity and understanding of epilepsy.
The Malaysian Society of Epilepsy also joins in the pledge, and invites you all to pledge with us as a sign of standing strong in support of the epilepsy community in Malaysia.
Take The Next Step With #EpilepsyPledge
The #EpilepsyPledge is the next global awareness campaign by International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) and International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE).
This campaign highlights opportunities for individuals, communities, schools, workplaces, and organisation to help improve safety, understanding and inclusion.
A new way for our community to turn awareness into tangible progress. We invite you to make one small, concrete action during 2026 that supports:
awareness
safety
inclusion
community understanding of epilepsy
Steps create awarenss. Pledges create change. Together, they move us from awareness to action.
On International Epilepsy Day 2027, we will celebrate and spotlight the pledges achieved across the world.
Your pledge can be personal or community-focused. What matter is that it addressed a real need, is achievable, and will be completed by 2026. Some example of individual pledge ideas:
I pledge to learn seizure first-aid so that I can respond more safely if someone has a seizure.
I pledge to challenge one myth about epilepsy in conversation so that the people around me have a more accurate and supportive understanding of epilepsy.
I pledge to share my epilepsy story so that others feel less alone and stigma is reduced in my community.
I pledge to check in on someone living with epilepsy so they know they are valued, supported, and not alone.
I pledge to use respectful, people-first language when talking about epilepsy so conversations are grounded in dignity.
Use them for inspiration and shape a pledge that fits your role, capacity, and community. For more information and inspiration, visit the #EpilepsyPledge page.

Purple Day is an internationally recognised epilepsy awareness day on 26 March every year. Cassidy Megan from Canada founded the day in 2008 to raise awareness for people with epilepsy and help them see that they are not alone. Cassidy picked purple to represent the day as lavender is internationally recognised as the flower for epilepsy.
Persatuan Epilepsi Malaysia is proud to join the epilepsy community in the global awareness campaign and we are publishing a video series about the myths and facts of epilepsy. Street interviews were conducted in Kuala Lumpur to seek Malaysian public knowledge and perception of epilepsy. Check out our videos below and share them online.
For you at home, you can join the celebration by wearing purple, share it online and caption it "On March 26, I'm wearing purple to support epilepsy awareness" with the hashtag #PurpleDay. You can also share our video series, IG and FB posts and tag us at @epilepsysocietymalaysia on IG or @PersatuanEpilepsiMalaysia on FB.

Epilepsy is not a single disease - causes of epilepsy ranges from genetic, metabolic, structural, infection, immune-related or unknown. While epilepsy as a diagnosis is not rare, many causes of epilepsy may be rare. When the underlying cause of epilepsy impacts fewer than 200,000 it is considered a rare epilepsy.
Examples of rare epilepsies include Dravet Syndrome, Dup15q, Angelman, CDKL5, Lennox-Gaustaut Syndrome and many others. Check out the Malaysian Rare Diseases List here: https://mrds.org.my/rare-disorder/list-of-rare-disorder/

Eisai (M) Sdn Bhd organised a very special epilepsy awareness campaign, with the help from Unit Bimbingan & Kaunseling and Unit Kesihatan of SMK Bandar Baru Ampang.
Our President, Dr. Fong Si Lei gave a talk about epilepsy and training on seizure first aid to the students and teachers. We ended the talk with a fun quiz session. The students themselves acted as the guide and emcee for the programme. PEM also helped select the poster winners and handed out the winning prizes, sponsored by Eisai (M) Sdn Bhd and their partners.
We also took the opportunity to exhibit our booth there, to interact with the students and teachers and inform them about PEM and our efforts, as well as giving out our epilepsy leaflets and seizure first aid posters.
Thank you to Eisai, their sponsorship partners, and SMK Bandar Baru Ampang for all the hard work in organising this campaign and their help in making it a successful event.
PEM hope to have more of this kind of awareness campaigns in all schools throughout Malaysia. We believe it is important that everyone has the basic seizure first aid knowledge and awareness of what epilepsy is all about.
Our thanks as well to all the SMK Bandar Baru Ampang's teachers and students for their warm hospitality.
With the support from Eisai, the School also hosted an epilepsy awareness competition - here are some of the winning posters. Thank you to the teachers and students of SMK Bandar Baru Ampang for all your effort and creativity poured into the campaign!
You are cordially invited to join us at Persatuan Epilepsi Malaysia's 34th Annual General Meeting and Sept' Support Group Session!

Thank you to everyone who took part in our 33rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) yesterday, in person and online. We are grateful for everyone's support and active involvement, especially during the election process that took place over a two-months period.
The committee is, as always, composed of people with epilepsy, doctors, healthcare workers, and researchers, all volunteering their time, energy and skills, with the aim to improve the quality of life of people with epilepsy via group effort. We have no doubt that the new committee will bring their expertise and experience together, to take our small Society forward, and effect more positive changes for people with epilepsy in Malaysia!
As we welcome our new Council Member, we would like to extend our warmest thanks and appreciation to the 2022/2024 ExCos, for your contribution and hard work, especially to the outgoing President Dr. Sherrini Bazir Ahmad. Dr. Sherrini has been involved with PEM since 2013, and after 11 years she is now passing on the baton to Dr. Fong Si Lei and her new team!
Thus, building on the hard work and inspiring contributions from all our previous ExCo members, we are looking ahead with excitement and enthusiasm for the term 2024-2026.

PEM is looking to identify suitable members to be
nominated for the Asian & Oceanian Regional Golden Light Awards 2025.
IBE Golden Light Awards are presented to young people either affected by epilepsy or have made a significant positive impact on the lives of others who have the condition.
The name of the award signifies someone who espouses the spirit of International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE), which is to "bring epilepsy out of the shadows and into the light", and to recognise the fact that people with epilepsy should not be defined by their condition.
Candidates must have had a personal epilepsy diagnosis, or have been providing care and support to a family member with epilepsy. Candidate must be between 18 and 35 years of age on the 1st January 2025, and be a registered member of PEM.
Previous Golden Light Award Winners have been chosen from amongst epilepsy patients, epilepsy carers, and epilepsy advocates.
Do you know a young person with epilepsy, who is working to 'bring epilepsy out of the shadows and into the light', who you believe is deserving of recognition? Or do you know someone caring for a person with epilepsy who is a 'shining light' and worthy of reward? Even if that person you know is now seizure free but is still active within the community, that person can still be nominated.
To nominate a candidate, reach out to us at epilepsymalaysia@gmail.com, detailing why you feel this person deserved to be nominated. Please reach out to us ASAP as PEM is entitled to submit ONE nominee before 8 Sept 2024.
Nominees are required to submit a written article, between 500 and 800 words in length, outlining their story. Alternatively, nominees may record a 3 min video. Nominations will be judged by a selected panel of IBE representatives, and chosen awardees will receive their awards at the IBE's Epilepsy and Society Symposium during the Asian & Oceanian Epilepsy Congress (AOEC) in New Delhi from February 20th to 23rd 2025, with all expenses covered by IBE.
You can find out more about the IBE Golden Light Awards here.

In October 2024, the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) will launch the Global Epilepsy Leaders Programme.
The programme aims to:
Equip epilepsy advocates and representatives with the skills, experience, and confidence to become leaders in the epilepsy field at national, regional and global levels.
Create a powerful global epilepsy community, fostering lifelong collaboration, co-creation, friendship, solidarity, and mutual support.
IBE will select 20-25 participants who will take a series of foundational e-learning modules. This will be followed by an opportunity to take a number of specialist modules in their areas of interest. Alongside the modules there will be live virtual workshops, individual/group tasks, guest lectures, and interactive forums.
The programme is a 15-month commitment, requiring up to 10 hours work per month. This programme will be run in English.
Help us identify people who you believe have the potential to become future epilepsy leaders, either as individual advocates or PEM leaders.
IBE especially encourage applications from people with lived experience in low- and middle-income countries, and young individuals (under 40). IBE will also consider applicants without personal experience of epilepsy but with a strong leadership potential and endorsement from PEM.
Applications are to be received by Monday, August 26th 2024. Interviews will be held in mid-September.
If you would like to know more about this programme or wish to be endorsed by PEM, kindly get in touch with us at epilepsymalaysia@gmail.com
There will be no support group meeting on the 20th of July and 24th of August.
The next meeting will be our AGM on the 25th of August 2024 (Sunday, 2- 4 pm).

A message from the 2022-2024 Committee:
"We want our committee members to be from a pool of people with epilepsy, caregivers, supporters of people with epilepsy, people who are now seizure free but want to be active in the community, medical professionals, social and public healthcare workers, and other advocates. We also encourage people from outside of KL/Selangor to put their names in the running. We want the committee to be as inclusive as possible, where everyone's target is to work together for the best interest of people with epilepsy."
