Finally, the 28th Annual Walk-Jog-Wheel-A-Thon
with the disabled, took place on the 19th of November at Dataran Merdeka! We were joined by YB Senator Tuan Isaiah Jacob, athletes of Malaysia Paralympic, Ms. Cosmo World participants and many other supporters.
Around 1500 participants gathered as early as 6AM to take part in the longest running charity walk in Malaysia. 30 NGOs including PEM, and their supporters walked/jog/wheel the 2km Fun Walk with the disabled.
PEM had around 50 participants on the day and one of us were lucky enough to score a lucky draw prize! Not only that, one of the committee members, Ms. Suet Yin took home the 4th place prize for the 7KM/Open Women's Category, which made the event all the more memorable!
We hope those who joined had a wonderful time, and we would like to take this chance to thank everyone who walked, ran, wheel, jogged, fundraised, and helped spread the awareness about epilepsy and the walkathon. We could not have done it without our members and supporters.
Thank you again to The Spastic Children's Association of
Selangor and Federal Territory (SCAS&FT), for organising such a wonderful event!

The Malaysian Society of Neurosciences (MSN) hosted its 31st Annual Scientific Meeting in Kuching last month. "Advancing Science Towards Better Epilepsy Care" was the theme of the Meeting and in that spirit, MSN graciously invited our present and past IBE Golden Light Award winners to be honoured at the Opening Ceremony!
Prof. Dato. Dr. Raymond Azman Ali, Chairman of the Epilepsy Council Malaysia, presented the awardess with their trophies and certificates.
Congratulations to all our awardees and we hope their achievements can be an inspiration to all of us. Visit our Award Winners Page to read all about the winners and their epilepsy journeys.
Thank you to MSN, Epilepsy Council Malaysia, and their sponsors, for including our award winners in their ceremony. PEM is delighted to be able to honour our winners at a physical event as due to the recent pandemic, our awardees had only been presented during online conferences.

Dear Friends,
Do you know a young person with epilepsy, who is working to 'bring epilepsy out of the shadows and into the light', who you believe is deserving of recognition? Or do you know someone caring for a person with epilepsy who is a 'shining light' and worthy of reward? Even if that person you know is now seizure free but is still active within the community, that person can still be nominated.
To nominate a candidate, reach out to us at epilepsymalaysia@gmail.com, detailing why you feel this person is deserving of the award. Candidate must be between 18 and 35 years of age on the 1st January 2024.
You can find out more about the IBE Golden Light Awards here.
We would like to call on members who want to help PEM by volunteering their time, energy, and resources to get in touch with the council. PEM is always looking for more volunteers and council members to join us. Now that we are back to doing physical events, we need more help run the programs! We seek anyone who feel they can give their time and energy to help us in our mission to educate, share, support and speak up about epilepsy.
Every two years, PEM will hold an election to select the President, Vice President, Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer, and at least 4 Council Members. PEM was built to serve the epilepsy community, and act as a voice for the epilepsy community. If you are a patient, caregiver, or epilepsy advocate, join us as we work together to improve the quality of life of epileptic patients in Malaysia.
We are also looking for representatives for outside of KL/Selangor to be a part of the committee. These state representatives will help liaise with local hospitals/doctors/patients to manage their local support programs as we look to start more patient outreach programs, to benefit those outside of KL/Selangor.
The next council election will be held in August 2024. Nominations will open in July 2024. Anyone who is interested in becoming an ExCo member/state representatives, we welcome you to make your interest known. Or if you want to nominate someone, please remember to ask for their permission first, and nominate them when the time comes. Reminder that only registered members of PEM are allowed to take part in the election process. All registered members should expect a notice and nomination forms in due course.

"My Brain Powers Differently" T-shirt (2023)
It has been more than 10 years since PEM launched their "Seize The Day" Official T-shirt. We wanted our members to be involved in making of the new T-shirt, thus we decided to hold a T-shirt design competition in last year. The winner of the competition was Ms. Gomathi Rajan.
Based on her design, we created the new Official T-shirt for Persatuan Epilepsi Malaysia - "My Brain Powers Differently" T-shirt - launched at our 2023 AGM recently. On the back is the powerful message of "Never Underestimate Someone's Battle - Epilepsy Warrior."
By purchasing our T-shirts, you will be contributing to the Society's funding, as well as help create awareness of epilepsy everytime you wear it!
So go ahead and get your T-shirts now!

This year in May, PEM nominated the late Ms. Janet Lee for the IBE International Golden Light Award, to be presented at the 35th International Epilepsy Congress in Dublin in September.
In July, we learned of Janet's passing with heavy hearts.
Not long after that, we received news that Janet was awarded the "Highly Commended" distinction by the IBE judging panel.
Congratulations to Joyce and Janet for this recognition. We will remember Janet as a talented and inspirational epilepsy warrior who never gave up on living her life to the fullest. May she rest in peace.
"We were so impressed by her great talent and your dedication and commitment to showcasing - together - what can be possible for people with epilepsy like Janet.
I am attaching the certificate of commendation that we had prepared for Janet to recognise her outstanding achievements as part of our Golden Light Awards."
- Donna Walsh, CEO of International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE)
