Persatuan Epilepsi Malaysia is proud to join the epilepsy community in celebrating International Epilepsy Day 2025. This year's celebration day falls on Monday, February 10, 2025!
International Epilepsy Day is an annual awareness-raising initiative organised by the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) and the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE)
The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that approximately 50 million people worldwide live with epilepsy (although recent studides suggest this figure may be higher) and around half will experience some form of stigma. In 2022, WHO Member States unanimously adopted the 10-year Intersectoral Global Actiona Plan on Epilkepsy and other Neurological Disorders. The goal of IGAP is to reduce the stigma, impact, and burden of neurological disorders and to improve the quality of life of people with neurological disorders, their carers and their families.
Epilepsy is given specific attention in this Plan, with global targets aimed at improving access to care and addressing the discrimination and human rights challenges impacting our community worldwide. Therefore in the weeks leading up to International Epilepsy Day we are calling on everyone to join us on our epilepsy journey, and take a step against stigma!
#50MillionSteps Campaign
Help us raise awareness of epilepsy stigma by walking 50,000,000 steps - one step for each person living with epilepsy - ahead of International Epilepsy Day, 10 February 2025.
How To Take Part
From January 6 through February 10, 2025, all you need to do is count your steps as you walk. Then record your steps on our Step Counter at https://50millionsteps.org.
We recommned logging your steps either at the end of each day or cumulatively at the close of the week so we can track the overall progress together and mark key milestones on our journey,
The grand total step will be revealed on February 10th, International Epilepsy Day.
Additional Suggested Activities:
Share your Daily/Weekly Step Count on Social Media
Share a Selfie from Your Walk
Get Creative with Your Steps - Bike, Dance, Swim - check out the conversion table below to help you count your steps in whatever activity you choose to do!
Remember to:
Spread the Word: Share your progress on social media using the hashtag #50MillionStepsAgainstStigma
Educate Others: Use this opportunity to educate others about mental health and the impact of stigma.
Celebrate Success: Celebrae your achievements and the collective impact of the campaign.
International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) is once again calling for artwork submissions from the epilepsy community for the online International Epilepsy Day Virtual Art Exhibition. Closing Date for submission is on Friday, 31 January 2025.
The theme of the entry should capture an aspect of the life domains of IBE'S Global Epilepsy Needs Study (GENS). See below for more details.
Entry is open to everyone of any age, including people with epilepsy, their family members, caregiver, doctors, nurses, social workers, and other epilepsy advocates. You are allowed to submit up to 3 pieces of original artwork, and they can be:
Painting or drawing

Pottery
Sculpture
Beadwork/Embroidery or Needlework
The quality of the scans or photos is the responsibility of the entrant. All entries must be submitted by the closing date.

2. Safety and survival: Depict the importance of safe environments and seizure first aid.
3. Healthcare and wellbeing: Express the challenges of navigating the healthcare system to get an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

10. Achieving your goals: Represent the diverse experiences of living with epilepsy and striving for a fulfilling life.
"This #EpilepsyDay, we are asking you to share your personal experiences that shed light on the unmet needs of people with epilepsy. Your stories will bring greater context to the findings of IBE'S Global Epilepsy Needs Study (GENS) and ILAE's newly developed Clinical Care Pathway. The goal is to use these insights to ensure people with epilepsy receive not only the best possible medical care but also the support they need to thrive in all aspects of their lives..."

PEM is looking to identify suitable members to be
nominated for the Asian & Oceanian Regional Golden Light Awards 2025.
IBE Golden Light Awards are presented to young people either affected by epilepsy or have made a significant positive impact on the lives of others who have the condition.
The name of the award signifies someone who espouses the spirit of International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE), which is to "bring epilepsy out of the shadows and into the light", and to recognise the fact that people with epilepsy should not be defined by their condition.
Candidates must have had a personal epilepsy diagnosis, or have been providing care and support to a family member with epilepsy. Candidate must be between 18 and 35 years of age on the 1st January 2025, and be a registered member of PEM.
Previous Golden Light Award Winners have been chosen from amongst epilepsy patients, epilepsy carers, and epilepsy advocates.
Do you know a young person with epilepsy, who is working to 'bring epilepsy out of the shadows and into the light', who you believe is deserving of recognition? Or do you know someone caring for a person with epilepsy who is a 'shining light' and worthy of reward? Even if that person you know is now seizure free but is still active within the community, that person can still be nominated.
To nominate a candidate, reach out to us at epilepsymalaysia@gmail.com, detailing why you feel this person deserved to be nominated. Please reach out to us ASAP as PEM is entitled to submit ONE nominee before 8 Sept 2024.
Nominees are required to submit a written article, between 500 and 800 words in length, outlining their story. Alternatively, nominees may record a 3 min video. Nominations will be judged by a selected panel of IBE representatives, and chosen awardees will receive their awards at the IBE's Epilepsy and Society Symposium during the Asian & Oceanian Epilepsy Congress (AOEC) in New Delhi from February 20th to 23rd 2025, with all expenses covered by IBE.
You can find out more about the IBE Golden Light Awards here.

In October 2024, the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) will launch the Global Epilepsy Leaders Programme.
The programme aims to:
Equip epilepsy advocates and representatives with the skills, experience, and confidence to become leaders in the epilepsy field at national, regional and global levels.
Create a powerful global epilepsy community, fostering lifelong collaboration, co-creation, friendship, solidarity, and mutual support.
IBE will select 20-25 participants who will take a series of foundational e-learning modules. This will be followed by an opportunity to take a number of specialist modules in their areas of interest. Alongside the modules there will be live virtual workshops, individual/group tasks, guest lectures, and interactive forums.
The programme is a 15-month commitment, requiring up to 10 hours work per month. This programme will be run in English.
Help us identify people who you believe have the potential to become future epilepsy leaders, either as individual advocates or PEM leaders.
IBE especially encourage applications from people with lived experience in low- and middle-income countries, and young individuals (under 40). IBE will also consider applicants without personal experience of epilepsy but with a strong leadership potential and endorsement from PEM.
Applications are to be received by Monday, August 26th 2024. Interviews will be held in mid-September.
If you would like to know more about this programme or wish to be endorsed by PEM, kindly get in touch with us at epilepsymalaysia@gmail.com
There will be no support group meeting on the 20th of July and 24th of August.
The next meeting will be our AGM on the 25th of August 2024 (Sunday, 2- 4 pm).

A message from the 2022-2024 Committee:
"We want our committee members to be from a pool of people with epilepsy, caregivers, supporters of people with epilepsy, people who are now seizure free but want to be active in the community, medical professionals, social and public healthcare workers, and other advocates. We also encourage people from outside of KL/Selangor to put their names in the running. We want the committee to be as inclusive as possible, where everyone's target is to work together for the best interest of people with epilepsy."

Let's Bowl gathering last Saturday June 22nd. We had over 30 people who came down bright and early to WangsaBowl Centre at One Utama.
Our members were treated to breakfast and 2 hours of bowling. It was a wonderful time of getting to know each other while showing off our bowling skills (or lack thereof!). A few lucky bowlers even went home with gifts for their high scores. It was our first outdoor fun activity for the year and we hope to have more of such gatherings in the future.
