Overtime: The extra period(s) played after a regulation game ends tied; also called OT
Referee: One of the two officials in most international and high school basketball competition.
Field Goal:Any basket scored from any place on the court during timed play
Five-Second Violation:When passing the ball inbounds after gaining possession, players have five seconds to get the ball to a teammate.
Free Throw:An unguarded attempt to score from a line 15 feet from the basket.
Blocking:The use of a defender´s body position to prevent an opponent´s advance.
Charging: An offensive foul that happens when an offensive player runs into a defender who has an established position.
Holding:Using the hands to interfere with or limit an opponent's freedom of movement.
Personal Foul:Contact between players that gives one team an unfair advantage. Players cannot push, trip, hack, elbow, hold, restrain or charge an opponent. These are also counted as team fouls
Three-Second Rule: No offensive player can be in the free-throw lane for longer than 3 seconds at a time.
Traveling: Taking more than one and a half steps without dribbling while you have the ball. It's also called traveling when you pick up your dribble and then move or change your pivot foot.
Timeout: When play is temporarily suspended by an official or at the request of a team to discuss strategy or respond to an injured player.
Turnover :When the offensive team loses the ball to the defensive team for any reason.
Field Goal: A basket made while the ball is in play.
Technical Foul:Actions by players which break the rules but are not floor violations.
Double Dribbling: Using both hands to dribble or when a player stops dribbling and then starts again
Three Point Shot: Any shot taken outside the three point arc on the floor
The Paint: The colored area under hoop
Guard: Position comprised of the most talented ball handlers, passers and outside shooters; Either point or shooting guard
Forward: Generally the team’s most versatile players; Positions self on the block and responsible for scoring and rebounding; Generally quicker than the center on defense
Center: Generally the tallest player on the court; Comprised of the team’s best shot blockers, rebounders; Scores most points off lay-ups
Zone Defense: A system of defense where a player guards a spefific area on the court (ex: 2-3, 1-3-1, 1-2-2)
Man vs Man Defense: A system of defense where a player guards a specific player on the court (ex: used in 5v5, 3v3, or 1v1 format)
