Internships

An internship at LFS offers the opportunity to gain a deep understanding of refugee resettlement in the Denver area. Interns will work with individuals from diverse cultures who are forging new beginnings in the United States. Challenging, educational and professional work experience will be gained through professional training and real work assignments that will provide valuable insight to the worlds of refugee resettlement and non-profit organizations. At times, interns will work closely with staff members, and other times independently, managing a workload comparable to LFS staff with the goal of helping advance the mission of LFS. Internships are integrated into the operations at LFS to help build the capacity of the organization while utilizing the diverse skill and talent of the interns. We greatly value the time commitment of each intern.

Internships We Offer

Accounting Assistant Intern

Responsible for entering clients’ data in ETO, filing all cash benefits documents in the client case files; CARES, Matching Grant, TANF and other programs for all Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains sites within Colorado and outside of Colorado.

Case Management Intern

The Case Management Intern provides services that assist refugees in adjusting to life in the United States. The intern helps clients meet immediate needs upon arrival and works with Case Managers in preparing and implementing client resettlement plans in accordance with timelines and requirements of federal, state and other funding sources.

Development Intern

The development intern plans and coordinates various division advancement events; activities will include community partner outreach, development and donation solicitation. The intern will also support the financial growth of the division through activities such as marketing, communications, fund plan development and donor development.

Education & Training Intern

What does it take to make a new place a home? As an intern in the Education & Training Department, you will be helping refugees develop crucial skills, learn American systems, and build community in order to transition successfully to life in the U.S. These elements can profoundly and positively impact refugees’ resettlement experience. Potential areas of focus are: 1) refugee students’ academic performance, delivered in after-school and summer camp programming; 2) women’s ability navigate basics of American systems (schools, healthcare, financial institutions, etc.) and build community; and 3) job-seekers’ ability to compete for entry-level positions through job-training and workplace English instruction.

While program focus and demographic served will vary and depend on the intern’s skills and background, all Education & Training interns will have the opportunity to contribute to 1) individual refugees’ skill development and adjustment to life in the U.S., 2) build organizational partnerships, and 3) program design and evaluation.

Employment Intern

Employment is the most important part of self-sufficiency and integration of refugees. In this position, you will have a real and immediate impact on the lives of the refugees and asylees that are resettled by LFS by helping them make this big step in their new lives here in the USA. This position is responsible for helping refugees and asylees apply for, obtain and retain employment. This involves working directly with job-seeking refugees, teaching them how to seek and apply for jobs, build a resume, and prepare for interviews. Additionally, this internship will involve being out in the community and business world, connecting refugees with employers, facilitating interviews and assisting with follow-ups.

Family Stabilization Intern

The Family Stabilization Intern will facilitate a Support Circle group for vulnerable refugee clients of LFS and the African Community Center. The support group will focus on one of four key topics: domestic violence support; suicide prevention; support for LGBT-identifying refugees; or youth violence and gang prevention. Depending upon the participant size there may be room for additional refugee clients in the group. The location for the group will be determined according to convenience for the population. Must be working towards or have a MSW to be considered for this internship.

Health Coordinator Intern

This position is responsible for the coordination of care for over 2,000 refugees served annually at LFS. The intern acts as a resource for caseworkers and community members to facilitate the access to services and information necessary to address healthcare needs of newly arrived

refugees.

Housing Assistant Intern

The housing assistant supports the Case Management Department in the areas of expanded housing development, building property management relationships, support for community outreach for refugees as tenants, and following up with case management regarding client/tenant issues for suitable and timely repairs or other maintenance concerns.

Media & Communications Intern

The Media & Communications Intern will be responsible for supporting the Program Advancement Administrator in creating, compiling and distributing a monthly newsletter to be distributed to LFS volunteers, staff, and supporters of LFS services. Additionally, the intern will photograph refugees and compile stories pertaining to the images. The intern will also implement graphic design projects to promote the division’s development activities.

TANF Program Specialist Intern

This position works with LFS staff who are dedicated to working with clients who are enrolled in the TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) program. This position assists clients in understanding the TANF program, completing required documents (specifically Work Activity Tracking Sheets and Monthly Status Reports) and assists staff in organizing, analyzing, tracking, and submitting documents to county and state partners. This position has client contact within the LFS office which brings the opportunity to interact with refugees from around the world.

Volunteer & Community Services Intern

Supports the Volunteer & Community Services Department in the areas of volunteer training and support, community outreach, special events planning, and direct work with the refugee community. This internship specifically enables LFS to expand its capacity to better meet the needs of refugees that are arriving to the US. Preferred: candidates with interest in volunteer management, developing community resources, and program development. Educational backgrounds of all kinds could find this internship interesting and rewarding.
