As you have probably been told several times, mentors are prohibited from giving medicine and medical advice to refugees. However, this does not mean that you are not able to provide transportation to medical appointments and guidance towards medical help.

Please inform MARC@denrescue.org if medical issues arise. If in doubt, have the family contact their case manager and/or get them in contact with a doctor.

Always call 911 in a medical emergency.

If a family member is suffering from a cold, feel free to take them to a pharmacy or doctor and let the professionals determine the proper treatment.

With more serious cases, take them to the ER or an urgent care facility. Most refugees are covered by Medicaid, at least for a while.

Refugee Health Information Network: http://www.rhin.org/

Provides multilingual health information for refugees and their health providers. The website has many helpful documents, videos, and audio in lots of languages which explain things like bedbugs, tuberculosis, HIV, and many many others.
