This is where I am putting recipes I don't really think are valid anymore. Sometimes that is sad, as they are delicious, and I am leaving them up on the internet, but, science moves forward, and sometimes it taketh away!
REASONS this recipe is in this section: I really think this is SO expensive no one would have been able to make this. I mean, if you are recreating $1000 hamburgers and gold-leaf sundaes, sure, but otherwise, just leave this one off the menu.
Creamed chicken with rhenish wine and barley.
3 chicken drumsticks. Marinate in rhine wine with garlic and dry mustard.
Fry briefly in butter.
Add the marinating liquid, plus some water. It needs broth, but I added a chicken billion cube plus the water, shrug.
Handful or two of dry barley.
Season with more garlic, mustard.
Boil until meat falls off bone, remove bones.
Turn down heat, put in several heaping tablespoons of sour cream.
I CHEATED and added black pepper, bad me. It was a small amount, and right at the end...sigh.
It also needed salt, and I added some wet mustard as well.
So, except for the black pepper that I added right at the end, it is all Viking Age ingredients. Seething in a pot is a very medieval way of cooking, though not sure if that applies to VA...but, it is certainly possible with VA cooking technology.
It's pretty yummy, anyway :)
The boyez ask me to make "that chicken thing", so, we'll call this a success. Yes, cooking with wine is SUPER expensive, so this might be a dish for a very fancy meal.
REASONS this recipe is in this section: I am soooooo annoyed about this! I seriously hope to be able to rehab this recipe because it is DELICIOUS and easy and cheap and feeds piles of people and is one of the tricks to feed the modern humans with tons of food allergies/preferences that normally are not okay with VA food. The problem is the cumin. Apparently "cumin" in the archaeology is a mistranslation of coriander. BAH.
<> Stir fry with EGGS.
I sauted lots of veg (heavy on kale and garlic, a few mushrooms, a little shredded cabbage), and added lots of powdered mustard and some cumin and smoked salt, at the last minute, I added sliced hard boiled eggs. It is like...uhhhh, vegi curry with egg slices
