$ total into it so far
I bought this 1984 BMW 533i with some major brake issues, fixed it up and now its pretty much ready to go. It's a rare car, with only 5000 of them being made from this year.
The good:
It is a 5 speed stick shift, drives great!
It has 17" wheels and Winter Sport Tires rated up to 160mph.
Its FAST
MSD ignition and Capacitor with 8.5 spark plug wires
Tinted windows
Clean Interior
Automatic Sunroof
Automatic Windows
Collectors Car!
Rare!!
Leather Interior
Drives like a sports car. Body is in good shape with some rust on lower door panels but has been sprayed with rust stop to stop rust. Interior is decent shape with some cracks on the inside as all of these models have. Exterior is probably 7/10, interior 9/10.. For a car this old in all-original shape, its amazing..
Car runs pretty good... Idles smooth. Probably could use a valve adjustment and burns oil and has white smoke upon startup. Cruises good and gets pretty good mileage on the highway for an E28 (around 22ish). Clutch plate is a little worn so first gear isn't smooth but all other gears work great. I shift into reverse to stop the transmission at stopping and make shifting into first smooth. A/C and heater work great.
What I've done since owned:
- Replaced Brake Master Cylinder
- Replaced All 4 rotors
- Replaced front calipers
- Replaced all 4 brake pads
- Replaced both front struts
- Replaced both front control arms and ball joints
- New iridium spark plugs
- New alternator
- Replaced engine wiring harness and color coded all wires (spiral wrapped & taped)
- Flushed and replaced Transmission fluid
- Replaced rear transmission seal
- Replaced master and slave clutch cylinders
- 17in wheels with almost new Winter Tires Racing Tires rated up to 160mph
- Replaced speed sensor and clutch position sensor
- Replaced instrument cluster (Odometer now reads 290,000 but only has 160,000)
- Replaced heat controls & heater valve control
- Fixed rust in floor pan
- Replaced rear bumper
- Replaced battery and battery box
- Added battery tender
- Added cold air intake
- Replaced radio, speakers (4-6's and 4-6x9's) & and added 8 tweeters

- Flushed coolant
- Replaced thermostat
- Been running Royal Purple Oil
- Maintained electric window motor and switches (all are now working)
- Replaced shifter knob
- Resurfaced windshield and replaced wiper blades
- Replaced all Radiator Hoses
- Replaced Water Pump
- Replaced Hood
- Replaced Battery (6 year warranty)
- Replaced Coolant Sensor
Purchased and Ready to Install:
- Manual Transmission - Linkage for first gear isn't smooth. Car is still very drivable. ($350)
- Blower Motor - - Heater fan is squeaking ($50)
- Hood Hinge - Hood isn't fully latching
What isn't so good on the car:
- Needs rear struts & cv joint boot
- Burns oil / white smoke (Needs Headgasket, Valve Seals, & Clean Cylinders) ($1000)
- Cylinder head and new gaskets will be needed most likely (head has 150k on it)
- Has leak on top gas tank (Ok as long as it is not completely filled)
- Possible power steering leak
- Needs prep work and paint job ($500)
Reason for selling is the car is I\ve had my fun with car. Really I am not pressed to sell it. Its pretty hard to find these cars in this nice shape which is why Im asking this money for it. I am sure that with $500 you could make this thing nearly mint, and you dont have to worry about many cosmetic issues, just a few annoying common issues.
