http://www.skyscanner.com is a good site that can search way out, in chart form, to find the cheapest fares if you can travel anytime. It should link you directly to the airlines website so when you purchase your fare you can make changes.
You can even download the app for your phone.
Once you get to Europe, use www.ryanair.com to get around, pretty much anywhere for $100-$200 though don't check a bag or you will pay just about as much for your bag as for your ticket.

I would fly delta when fares are within $50 - $100 nearest the next carrier. You can compare on www.onetravel.com or www.hotwire.com and then book the flight on delta.com as you should get the same rate plus the ability to cancel the flight within the next 24 hours and change the flight at anytime before the day you fly for $150 vs having a non refundable / changeable flight.
