Microfilters

During the Emigrant 15 trip, both of the filter pumps we had became badly clogged and almost un-usuable. One of the pumps frames broke due to the excessive force being applied. A possible solution in the future is to take along a spare filter cartridge. Another possible solution is to try cleaning the filter protector in situ. See below.

The microfilter cartridges now sold by REI for the PÛR drinking water system are now manufactured by Katadyn. They come with a removable filter protector.

Cleaning the filter protector and filter cartridge:

If the cartridge becomes difficult to pump, clean the filter protector. To clean, carefully remove the netting and filter protector from cartridge. Place filter protector on flat surface and clean with damp sponge or fabric. Rinse with water and reinstall. It is also recommended to clean the filter cartridge by holding on the water outlet side and “swishing” it in water. This will remove most particles that may have collected on the surface. This latter technique can also be used on the older filter cartridges that don't have a filter protector.

The filter cartridge may be difficult to unscrew with bare hands. Almost any strong, straight metal device, such as the back of a knife blade, can be used as an opening tool.

Lubricating the cartridge o-ring with the Katadyn lubricant that comes with the cartridge makes it easier to remove the cartridge.
