School Policies

I.S. 93 Code of Conduct:  R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

We are all guided by our code of conduct, which is posted in our classrooms and in our hallways on bulletin boards.  R.E.S.P.E.C.T. permeates our school as a positive reminder of ways we contribute to our school community every day to make it better to learn and grow.  We promote R.E.S.P.E.C.T. throughout the year through special programs, activities and events such as Student of the Month, for example.

RESPONSIBILITY:  We follow school rules and take responsibility for our actions.

EXCELLENCE:  We seek to achieve the highest quality of work, both at home and in school.

SERVICE:  We help build a better community inside and outside of school by serving others.

PERSISTENCE:  We work hard, never give up, and ask for help to achieve our goals.

EXEMPLIFY:  We strive to be positive role models and set a good example for others.

COLLABORATION:  We work together with classmates and adults to achieve our goals.

TRUST:  We are their to support others in our school community.

Attendance Policy

Lateness:  Getting to work and school on time each day is a positive habit that we promote.  The day officially begins at 8:00 a.m.   Most 93 students arrive to school and class on time each day.   We know that lateness can negatively affect academic achievement.  It is also disruptive and leads to lost instructional time (i.e., arriving ten minutes late to school for a week is fifty minutes of lost instruction; that's more than a class period).  Please help your child develop the good habit of arriving to school on time.  Let us know if there are circumstances that make getting to school on time difficult so we can be supportive.

Absence:  Department of Education policy stipulates that students must have an attendance rate of 90% or better.  Studies show that students who come to school regularly do far better that students who do not.  Our teachers are required to take attendance throughout the school day beginning with homeroom at 8:00 a.m.  Illness, observation of a religious holiday, and the death of a family member are considered explained absences.  A digital or physical note from a parent and/or doctor must be provided to your child's homeroom teacher or grade dean for such absences to be considered explained.  When a student is absent, it is important to keep up with your school work and any homework assignments.  To recover incomplete work, you can contact your child's teachers or guidance counselor via email.  Email contact information is located under I.S. 93 on this website.

Cell Phone Policy

In consultation with our School Leadership Team (SLT), student cell phones, smart watches, air pods, and other portable electronic devices must be off and out of sight when in the building during school hours unless otherwise indicated by a school official.  Smart watches must be in airplane mode only and may only be used to check the time.  Given the dangers of unchecked access of adolescents to social media, the members of the SLT are in consensus that this policy is for the safety and welfare of all of our students and community.  Our policy is in alignment with Chancellor's Regulation A-413

Regarding cell phones and electronic devices, students who violate the DOE's Discipline Code, our school's policy, Chancellor's Regulation A-413, and /or the DOE's Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Policy (IAUSP), will be subject to discipline in accordance with the Discipline Code.  Cell phones and other devices used in violation of school policy will be subject to confiscation by school administration and will be returned only to parents/guardians.  Where appropriate, measures will be instituted in a progressive fashion.  Such measures include, but are not limited to:  warnings, confiscation and return at the end of the school day, confiscation and return after parent conference, confiscation and return after entering into a behavioral contract, or revocation of privilege to bring cell phone to school.

Note:  Parents and students must NOT text each other during the school days.  If there is an emergency, contact the main office at 718-821-4882, and we will support you.

For questions regarding this policy, please contact Martha Bayona, our Parent Coordinator, at 718-821-4882, extension 2183 or mbayona2@schools.nyc.gov.

Dress Code

Our School Leadership Team (SLT) adopted our uniform policy in 2007.  In alignment with Chancellor's Regulation A-665, we believe our uniform policy has helped our school "promote a more effective learning climate; foster school unity and pride; improve student performance; foster self-esteem; eliminate label competition; simplify dressing and minimize costs to parents; teach children appropriate dress and decorum in their “work” place; and help to improve student conduct and discipline."  We are proud to be a uniform school and have a variety of uniform options for our students.  We encourage our students to wear their uniforms every day and to participate in school spirit days throughout the year.

For your convenience and in support of our uniform policy, our school uniform comes in several styles and can be purchased from two vendors:  NEEDLEHEADS or SEBASTIAN PRINTINGNeedleheads is located at 88-01 Myrtle Avenue, Glendale, NY 11385.  You can purchase online at neeedleheadsnyc.com/shop.  The store phone number is (718) 850-4252 (Ask for Dennis Coy).  If you don't see I.S. 93 apparel, CLICK "LOAD MORE" until our uniforms come up.  Sebastian Printing is located at 5607 Myrtle Avenue, Ridgewood, NY 11385.  You can call (718) 724-3888 or email sebastianprinting@gmail.com.

Burgundy (grade 6).  Dark Blue (grade 7).  Royal Blue (grade 8).

Note:  You are not required to order from Needleheads as per Chancellor's Regulation A-665.  While we believe we offer very affordable prices, you may purchase from any vendor/store of your choice.  Parents have the right to secure an exemption from the uniform requirement.  You may also contact the principal, designee, or family advocate if you cannot afford a uniform.  As far as discipline for a student not wearing the school uniform, our approach is to remind the student to wear it.  We will call home if non-compliance is a frequent occurrence to gain insight and support from parents. We are proud that our students wear their uniforms daily and want to maintain wearing our uniform as a positive experience. The uniform should be worn properly at all times (i.e., not tied up in a knot, worn backwards, hidden, ripped, or written on, etc.).

Students must also adhere to the following DOE guidelines of appropriate dress :   In order to maintain a positive learning environment, it is expected that I.S. 93 students dress in a professional manner. We expect students to be dressed appropriately to ensure safety and to keep the focus on teaching and learning. We would like all parents and guardians to remind students of proper dress protocols on campus.

Prohibited forms of dress at I.S. 93 include, but are not limited to:

1) Hats or caps (with the exception of headwear worn for religious observance), unless approved for spirit dress days (i.e., crazy hat day or sports hat day).

2) Clothing that contains references to drugs, alcohol, sex, violence, racism, or gang-affiliation.

3) Clothing that does not provide coverage of torso, undergarments, and private body parts above or below the waistline, including see-through garments of any kind.

4) Flip-flops and other footwear that does not securely cover and protect the foot and heel.

5) Sunglasses while indoors.

6) Grills over teeth, over-sized hoop earrings, or multi-finger rings.

If a student comes to school wearing clothing prohibited by the Dress Code, then the student’s parents will be notified, the student may be subject to the interventions and disciplinary responses set forth in the Discipline Code, and the student will be expected to make appropriate adjustments to his/her clothing to conform with the Dress Code (e.g., turning shirt inside out, borrowing temporary clothing until the end of the school day, etc.).

Safety and Discipline

When it comes to addressing inappropriate student behavior inside and outside of the school building, we follow the NYC Department of Education  Discipline Code.  Click here for the complete code, which also includes a Bill of Student Rights and Responsibilities.

Everyone's safety is our number one priority.  Our school is monitored by surveillance cameras.  Our exterior doors are alarmed.  We are supported by NYPD School Safety Agents assigned to our building.  We have an assistant principal, a dean, and a guidance counselor for each grade.  We engage everyone in practice safety drills, which include evacuation, shelter in, and lock down drills to keep us sharp and responsive.

We remind our students to be mindful before and after school hours to avoid and report any mischievous, menacing, and harmful behavior to parents and school officials immediately.

Our school's Safety Committee meets monthly (see our school's calendar for dates and times).  Meetings are open to our parents.  Check the school calendar on this website.
