Dual Language Program
Mission Statement:
The Dual Language program is an honors and enrichment program designed to promote our school’s culture of acceptance and pride in being multilingual and multicultural. The program is committed to provide the standards-based academic rigor required for career success in a competitive global society. A variety of activities are provided to parents throughout the year to build a strong family partnership.
Vision Statement:
All students will become bi-literate in Spanish and English. Students will be part of an environment that promotes multiculturalism, diversity and inclusion. In this learning environment students will cultivate a love for learning languages and about their respective cultures. Through the use of technology, invigorating trips, and group work, students will learn the skills needed to solve problems innovatively and creatively. The Dual Language program will prepare students to fully function in a global society and expand their career opportunities.
Program Description:
IS 93’s interest for opening a 50/50 Dual Language program stems from the desire to extend our highly- acclaimed academic success to incoming 6th grade bilingual Spanish ENLs and native English speaking students.
Our 50/50 program will include first and second language development, language attainment, and multicultural competencies. Our Dual Language students will be expected to achieve academically, show continuous progress in content areas in both languages, develop positive cross-cultural perspectives, and appreciate cultural diversity while becoming linguistic and academic role models for the school community. Our students will receive all mandated services while being challenged with high classroom rigor. This type of “side-by-side” program delivers the best of both worlds to our students: ENL students receive mandated services, and SP students attain and maintain second language fluency.
English speakers from honors classes will make up half of the class. Spanish-speaking ENL students will make up the other half of the class. For every other week, subjects will be taught in English. For the other week, subjects will be taught in Spanish. This class will be a Regents-track class for Math, and if possible, Science and LOTE Examination for Spanish.
The program will add a grade each school year to ensure academic success and fluency and build opportunities for other families. Many questions arise at the onset of a program, such as, "Which subjects will be taught in Spanish?" and "Does my student need to speak Spanish already?" These questions and many more will be addressed at parent meetings and by emailing concerns, ideas, and suggestions to ESantos3@schools.nyc.gov.
Workshops and professional development sessions will be held to address any concerns and questions, and an informational newsletter and website will be generated to exchange ideas and inform parents about new developments in our program.
Parent involvement enhances every educational endeavor and will greatly support the creation of our 50/50 program. By using information from the Parent Information Toolkit and inviting guest speakers (parents and or teachers) from existing DL programs we will keep parents fully informed about the program, Additionally, we will present our program at meetings at our feeder schools and present information at an on-site orientation parent meeting for our incoming students. Through collaboration with our parent developer and parents, we will develop surveys to help in the decision-making process of the creation of our program. Finally, we will invite parents to sit in on selected planning committees.

El programa del Doble Idioma es un programa de honores y enriquecimiento diseñado para promover la cultura de nuestra escuela, la aceptación con orgullo de ser multilingüe y multicultural. El programa está comprometido a proporcionar el rigor académico basado en estándares requerido para el éxito profesional en una sociedad global competitiva. Una variedad de actividades se proporcionan a los padres durante todo el año para construir una asociación familiar fuerte.
Visión del Doble Idioma:
Todos los estudiantes serán bilingües en español e inglés. Los estudiantes serán parte de un ambiente que promueve el multiculturalismo, la diversidad y la inclusión. En este ambiente de aprendizaje los estudiantes cultivarán un amor por aprender idiomas y sobre sus respectivas culturas. Mediante el uso de la tecnología, viajes vigorizantes y trabajo en grupo, los estudiantes aprenderán las habilidades necesarias para resolver los problemas de manera innovadora y creativa. El programa de doble idioma preparará a los estudiantes para que funcionen plenamente en una sociedad global y amplíen sus oportunidades de carrera.
Descripción del programa:
I.S.93 esta interesada en abrir un Programa de Dos Idiomas 50/50 proviene del deseo para extender nuestro aclamado éxito académico con los nuevos estudiantes bilingües de español “ENL” y habla inglesa de 6to grado. Nuestro programa 50/50 incluirá primer y segundo desarrollo del idioma, logro del idioma y competencias multiculturales.
Se espera que nuestros estudiantes de Dos Idiomas tengan logros académicamente, mostrando el progreso continuo en áreas contenidas en ambos idiomas, desarrollar perspectivas positivas transculturales, y apreciar la diversidad cultural mientras llegan a ser modelo lingüístico y académico para la comunidad escolar. Nuestros estudiantes recibirán todos los servicios asignados mientras tienen un desafío con un rigor más exigente en el aula de clase. Este tipo de programa "paralelo" entrega lo mejor de ambos mundos a nuestros estudiantes. Estudiantes de “ENL” reciben los servicios asignados, estudiantes de “SP” alcanzan y mantienen fluidez del segundo idioma.
Los estudiantes que hablan ingles de clases de honores compondrán la mitad de la clase. Los estudiantes hispano parlantes de ENL compondrán la otra mitad de la clase. Las materias se enseñarán en inglés por una semana. A la semana siguiente, las materias se enseñarán en español. Esta clase será una clase de seguimiento de los “Regentes” para matemáticas, español, y si es posible, ciencias.
El programa agregará un grado cada año escolar para asegurar el éxito y fluidez académica, y para construir oportunidades para otras familias.
Muchas preguntas surgen en el comienzo de un programa, tal como, "¿Que materias serán enseñadas en español?" y "¿Mi hijo(a) necesita hablar ya español?". Estas preguntas y muchas más serán respondidas en reuniones de padres; preguntas concernientes, ideas y sugerencias pueden enviarse por correo electrónico a gserna@schools.nyc.gov.
