Dear Families,
Every spring, the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) is given to all English Language Learners (ELLs) in grades K-12. The results are used to determine your child’s progress in learning English and the level of English as a New Language and/or bilingual education services your child will receive for the following school year.
This year, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) has determined that assessments will be school-based and in-person, and it will not be possible to administer any of the exams remotely. Students receiving fully-remote instruction are not expected to come to school to take the state exams, including the NYSESLAT. Families of students in fully-remote instruction may choose to have their children come to school and participate in the state exams. If your child does not take the Spring 2021 NYSESLAT, they will continue to receive the same level of English as a New Language and/or bilingual education services for the 2021-2022 school year.
The NYSESLAT helps you, your child, and your school understand your child’s proficiency in English in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The NYSESLAT is administered over two or more days.
This year, the exams will be administered within the following dates:
Speaking section: April 19 – June 9
Listening, Reading, and Writing Sections: May 17 – June 9
Please review this NYSESLAT Parent Guide for more information.
If you would like for your child to take the NYSESLAT this spring, please notify using the form below by April 23, 2021 . Our school will prepare and create a schedule to ensure the health and safety of all our students. Please note your child must complete the DOE Health Screening (healthscreening.schools.nyc) to enter the building. Students who are currently enrolled in fully-remote instruction do not need to complete the consent form for COVID-19 testing in order to enter the building for the exams.
