For readings, ppt slides and related materials, see bottom of page.

Lecture materials have been shifted onto more organized new page:
L01 (revised) Islamic Knowledge This page is meant as a resource for teachers. It contains the PPT slides, which the teachers can use to give the lecture on their own. In addition, it contains the QUIZ, which could be printed out and given in class -- as opposed to using the online version of QUIZSTAR. It also contains some supplementary readings and lectures, related to the current lecture, which could be assigned or used by the teacher.

The goal of this first lecture is to explain why we want to have a separate course on statistics for Muslims. Why a standard Western course on statistics is not suitable for Muslims. However, our goal is not to exclude non-Muslims -- based on this idea, the title of the course can be: Introductory Statistics: An Islamic Approach, which clarifies that non-Muslims are welcome to take the course, but the course relies heavily on Islamic ideas. For each lecture, we have several steps which are required to achieve the target, the learning objectives for that lecture. These are listed below:

All lectures have FIVE or more Components:

1.  Powerpoint + Audio Files for Each Slide: [42 minutes] LINK to view or download
2.  Transcript -- Written form of the audio files in (1) above. [revised & corrected]
3.  Lecture: Written Text of Lecture, equivalent of textbook. ISM01main.doc (bottom of page)
4.  LAB:  Lab for this lecture is a GENERAL introduction to EXCEL. -- ISMLAB01 (bottom)
5.  QUIZ: Q01.doc attached below
6.  Supplementary Readings. There are THREE readings for this lecture. All are attached at bottom of page.

A similar introductory lecture is available as a first lecture on a course on Islamic Economics

Associated companion lecture, provides a classroom discussion of the distinctive features of an Islamic approach to education, and to statistics.

The goal of lecture 1 is to establish the key differences between Western approaches to Knowledge and the Islamic Approach. Some of these differences are listed below.

This lecture is a presentation in the OPEN OFFICE format, which has both sound and slides so that it is a complete lecture. To listen to it, you must have open office installed on your computer. This is a free download from http://www.openoffice.org/

I am putting a zipped version of the slides and the MP3 files associated with each slides in the downloadable files at bottom of page.
