Fortuna is the hub of growing trade empire. Founded as a penal colony for unwanted dissidents of the old imperium, the residents of Fortuna have developed a fiercely independent and self-sufficient outlook. ‘The Citizens of Fortuna Shall Never be Slaves’ says the motto, and most people believe it.
Of course, just because the Citizens will never BE slaves doesn’t mean that they cannot own them - Fortuna maintains a class of artificial lifeforms known as ‘Bioroids’ to take care of a myriad of tasks. Bioroids range from the simple (a goldfish bioengineered to poop less) to the complex (human-type bioroids with enhanced cognitive, physical or emotional capabilities).
By law Bioroids have no real rights and are the property of whoever hold their ‘contract’. Note that the contract holder is required a degree of care and upkeep for their Bioroid, and failure to do so could result in confiscation of this valuable property.
Humanoid-type bioroids are generally the most expensive, and well-trained and capable models can cost as much as a luxury ship. There is a massive demand for Bioroids throughout systems within and without Fortuna’s sphere of influence, and Bioroids can be found wherever Fortuna makes footfall.
All aspects of life in Fortuna are governed by various Guilds - associations of citizens that work both as Trade Unions and Corporations. The largest by far is the Representative’s Guild (abv. RepGuild), membership in which is required to take elected or appointed office in government.
By law all electronic systems that run on silicon chip must be compatible with the official operating system of Fortuna, XoS (Expandable Operating System). This can include something as simple as a washing machine, or as complex as a starships jumpdrive. The Citizens of Fortuna enjoy complaining about the many bugs that pop up trying to make the same OS work with everything, but it is a familiar and ever present part of life in the modern world.
