Of all the mysteries of the cluster, Thule is the most mysterious. Although connected by slipknot to three other systems, no record of its existence appears in any of the old Imperial archives. Thule is a young red dwarf star, and the inner orbits are dominated by three gas giants. These stars serve as a kind of gravitational vacuum cleaner that keep the outer planets Castor and Pollux mostly free of comets and asteroids.
Furthermore, much like Montague the flora and fauna of its twin habitable planets is like nothing seen anywhere else in the known cosmos, and much of it large, poisonous, or otherwise deadly. If the planets were terraformed at any point, they were clearly not terraformed with human colonization in mind.
Then there is the matter of colonists themselves. Although outwardly (and genetically) human, the inhabitants feature strange psionic powers unknown in the remainder of human space. At low levels this manifests as certain uncanny ‘luck’, or sixth sense. At high levels feats such as mind control, the ability to create mental illusions or even psycho-kinetics has been observed.
In spite of these advantages (or perhaps even because of them) the technology of the twin inhabited planets Castor and Pollux has remained stunted at a late bronze/early iron-age stage of development. Outside of some larger regional dominions government is either spartan and/or ineffectual, and life is nasty, brutish and short.
Both planets feature hostile terrain, but where Castor is more a series of vast wastelands and jungles broken up by giant brackish seas, Pollux is dominated by great oceans broken up by archipelagos. Both worlds are ruled over by mighty ‘Priest Kings’ - those whose psychic abilities go beyond the norm. In past the worlds have conducted diplomacy or have even conducted wars in a shared mental realm they call ‘Azathoth’
Another aspect of the curious heritage of the inhabitants of Castor and Pollux is the unusually idealized physiology of the natives. Males tend to be large, square jawed and broad shouldered, whereas females tend towards wide, child-bearing hips and enhanced secondary sexual characteristics.
Curiously, males among the Priest Kings tend to be more slender and less attractive in general, but this might be a factor of lifestyle rather than inherited traits. This gap is not exhibited in priestesses who tend to be like other females, only more so.
Both Castor and Pollux keep a significant portion of the population in slavery. In fact, apart from handmade ‘primitive’ goods and exotic beasts, Thule’s main trade good throughout the cluster is slaves.
Although the holding and trading of slaves is technically illegal in both Charon and Fortuna held space, Charon maintains a large slave population in the hosting of non-residents (which by law must have a ‘keeper’, a de-facto owner). Thulians with significant psychic abilities are prized among the noble houses of Charon.
