The earliest documented name of North Caldwell was originally called Little Sulphur. It was listed on the original Greenbrier Station list as Little Sulphur before North Caldwell, unfortunately, the origin of this name is lost to time. Once the depot was built in 1901 the name was changed to Hunter, for the grantors of the right-of-way in the area. It was then changed again and finally to North Caldwell in September 1902 due to confusion with a station called Hunter on the Norfolk and Western Railway. North Caldwell may have been named after John or Margaret North Caldwell who was the son and daughter of James Robinson Caldwell who Caldwell was named after.
