Confirm your data is backed up.

1. Use Windows Restore to restore to a point in time before the infection.

2. If that doesn't work, disable system restore.

3. Download and install Malwarebytes (free trial)

or Windows Security Essentials (free for home users and small businesses up to 10 computers)

You may need to download to a USB drive from a working computer.

4. Unplug network cable to prevent access to your computer from remote cracker.

5. Boot into Safe Mode by pressing F8 during boot up

6. Use Malwarebytes (free for home users) or Microsoft Security Essentials (free for home users) to remove malware.

7. Reboot to normal mode and run another scan.

8. If none of these methods work, boot to a rescue CD and run a malware scan. A great free one is Kaspersky.

If the computer doesn't boot to the CD, reboot and press F2, F12, Esc or Delete during bootup to get to the BIOS and set the CD as the first boot device.

Alternate 1. Remove the hard drive and place into external hard drive enclosure, plug into a working computer that has up-to-date anti-malware and scan.

Alternate 2. Back up your data to an external USB drive, then reinstall the operating system and applications.

Free Anti-Malware

Microsoft now has free anti-malware for home users called Security Essentials. Before installing it, remove all other anti-malware software.

Prevent Infection

To prevent infection, see if a site is safe before going to it by putting the URL in the Norton or McAfee checker.
