Online team
Edwin
I forgot to mention it to you all that I was interested in recording our online team google hangouts discussions.
It is easy to record a hangout directly to youtube with just one click. I’ve recorded hundreds of these discussion. see http://j.mp/QESX9A
Uses and Benefits of Recording
for record keeping (we can go back and take notes from the discussions),
so people can see what a design team does and how it works,
others can follow our progress,
so it’s educational for others
perhaps use the video clips for some other educational uses.
Problems with Recording
people may feel inhibited in sharing deeply and honestly,
lack of privacy my close don’t openness
may be issues of safety for some people not to have information public. I imagine this is even more so in very authoritarian communities.
What is the role of design and empathy in this issue of recording?
Empathy thrives on openness
Let me know what you think about that?
Nudrat would like to join our online empathy team and she is from Pakistan. She is concerned about the calls being recorded and placed on youtube. Nudrat said she could do audio and turn off the video.
Safiullah said he was fine with recording .
Sonja
I am totally fine with this being recorded.
It's a great idea! I'd like to use it myself in the future.
We all will have access to it, right?
Georgi:
It is also an important one for me.
I am also personal against recording of our meetings.
The idea of empathy is to be connected in the heart not in the mind (or at least mind will follow ).
It is important to be in that moment, to be consciously here and now.
The recording will capture particular moment, that someone will view it in the future, but he will not be in the moment, he will be sort of disconnected to this particular moment.
It will be not so alive as the live talk.
I personally am trying to use less of the technology and more of the human relationship.
I am not 100% against technology, however it can be used in our human development in earlier phases.
And when we talk about empathy it is (for me) inappropriate to use the recording, because it feels not so private. It is like making an mediation public - the whole idea of privacy, inner connection, protection etc. is lost.
Hi Sonja and everyone,
Yes, the idea is that the video is on youtube and anyone can use it.
I would like to show everyone on the team how to do empathic listening and hold an empathy circle.
here is an example of the recording and how to do an empathy circle as well. http://j.mp/QESX9A
When we meet, we can use this process to discuss the issue of recording. It gives a chance for everyone to be heard and to empathize with each other around this issue and come to some mutual decisions and actions.
