Sensible names for fairy chess pieces, with an Italian appendix: lessico italiano per gli scacchi eterodossi

§1 Compound or hybrid pieces: too many names
The queen is a rook-bishop hybrid, but is a standard chess piece: its position is well-established and its name is uncontroversial. The presence of the queen is probably the most important and distinctive feature of western/international chess, as opposed to the other members of the large family of historical chess games: post-medieval western chess was called ajedrez de la dama, Spanish for chess of the queen... Anyway, let's focus on heterodox chess compound/hybrid pieces, also known as (compound/hybrid) fairy pieces.
A lot of heterodox variants, such as Seirawan Chess, Illescas Dragon Chess, and Capablanca/Gothic Chess, have one or more other hybrids beside the standard queen, the most important and typical being the knight-rook and the knight-bishop. Unfortunately, there is no consensus on their names.
Since 1617, when these hybrids were first introduced, a lot of different names have been proposed. Almost all proposals fall into two categories:
government, aristocracy, military, hierarchy terms;
animal terms (mostly real, sometimes mythological).
At present, the most widespread names are chancel(l)or for the knight-rook, and archbishop for the knight-bishop.
Nonetheless, such an important modern variant as Seirawan Chess, in its official guidelines, imposes animal names and identities to the two hybrids: in the official version of Seirawan Chess, the knight-rook is an elephant, and the knight-bishop is a hawk. Not only are they called these names, but they should have the appearance of these animals!
This choice is infelicitous for more than one reason. In particular, it's astonishing that the name and identity of an elephant is used for a piece that is anything but a bishop. -- We know that the bishop derives from the elephant of the old versions of the game, has always been an elephant in most members of the chess family, and is still called an elephant in a lot of languages, including Russian! Also alfil, alfiere etc. (names of the chess bishop in several languages) derive from the Arabic word for the elephant.
It's curious that, when Seirawan Chess was launched as one among some new variants playable on Chess Dot Com (October 2022), several users wrote forum comments such as the following: "Please give us a piece set that uses elephant and hawk icons for Seirawan Chess", "The hawk and elephant definitely need a redesign to actually look like what they're named after". At the beginning, only the very good unambiguous and self-explanatory compound symbols, shared with many other variants, were available. But, after that, the animal icons were introduced too, and were even made the default choice for Seirawan Chess.
(Here's a practical suggestion: in the Chess Dot Com menu Settings > Themes & Colors > Piece theme, choose "Classic" or "Alpha". They are not the most beautiful, but are [still?] without the Seirawan animals, nor do they display unitary symbols for so-called chancel(l)or and archbishop.)
§2 A simple and radical solution: no self-standing names
When self-standing names for hybrid pieces are really needed (technical reasons, one-letter abbreviations, etc.), let's stick to chancel(l)or and archbishop. In all other cases, we can make without them. Note that
chancel(l)or has 3 syllables, knight-rook only 2;
archbishop and knight-bishop both have 3 syllables;
amazon has 3 syllables, knight-queen only 2.
As for abbreviations, NR, NB, NQ and the like will be alright for most human uses. Being so short and easy, such abbreviations can replace the full names in virtually any kind of informal writing.
Getting rid of complicated and controversial words and symbols could be interesting and useful: heterodox chess will look much more serious and attractive to the eye of the typical or average standard chess player, who might get curious or interested in variants but is not willing to become a variant geek or expert. They may deem it unnecessary to deal with confusing or ambiguous vocabulary. It may be discouraging. They are probably right.
§4 Ancóra in italiano: regalità e... sinicità
Royal, non-royal.
Altro nome legittimo e perspicuo: autocattura consentita/permessa.
