Green Room

A green room is a room for actors when they aren't on stage, at Stanford’s Community Farm, we too have a “green room”. A corn room. In the back of the farm we planted a small plot of corn. In this plot, we left a space in the middle empty, so as the corn grows upwards this plot of land will remain fallow. Once the corn has successfully matured and reached adult size, a room will be created will walls of corn and shade from all sides. This room provides a shaded spot for us to learn and teach in. This corn room is a great spot to learn about a classic three sisters crop. Where corn, squash, and beans are all grown on the same plot of field. The Corn is used a trellis for the beans to climb up as the squash grows on the foot of the corn. The beans help provide nitrogen to the soil, which the corn and squash need. As the squash shades the soil helping to retain water and blocks sunlight which prevents the growth of weeds.
