Utility model INPI 12-01681, June 11, 2012

Figure 1. Omni anchoring belt D4S

Two hands for you, a omni-anchoring line for the boat

Sailors say: One hand for you, one for the boat. Pity: working, cooking, etc. are demanding when executed with one single hand.. However, if you don't hold yourself, the movements of the boat may transform you into a projectile.

The omni-anchoring belt line D4S can be secured almost anywhere aboard. It damps the shocks and preserves your stability while leaving your two hands free.

Functioning

A wide lumbar strap to distribute the efforts. The rear part of the belt is 50mm wide.

The stress is distributed on a wide surface in order to prevent pain and lesions.

An adjustable belt. The front part of the belt is a narrow strap (25mm) with a quick fastener.

The front part does not receive any stress, therefore it is narrow and light.

An elastic rope forming a loop to hold oneself and damp the shocks.

The high resistance elastic rope passes around or in a strong point (bar, mast, handle, shackle..) and is tied to a snaphook.

The elastic rope (at the front) and the lumbar strap (at the rear) form a loop that holds you in position.

An adjustable loop to tie yourself short. This allows for the best trade off between stability and freedom of movement.

The elastic rope is knotted every 20cm and the snaphook can be fixed anywhere along the rope.

Tied short, you are stuck to the strong point, the stability is maximal. Tied large, you have freedom of movement..

Instructions for use

Placement. Snap the quick fastener, adjust the length, tie the free extremity of the strap (roll it and use the embedded scratch).

Figure 4. Install the belt (model BA 2012 06)

At rest. Fold the elastic line and tie it to the snaphook.

Figure 5. Fold the elastic line. Left: around the belt. Center: rolled (model BA 2012 06)

Secure yourself. Pass the elastic line around or in the strong point, clip the extremity in the snap hook.

Never use the belt in a different configuration. The safety (fastener, snaphook) could open alone.

Figure 6. How to secure yourself. Correct configuration, two dangerous configurations.

IMPORTANT. The omni-anchoring belt is not an anti-fall device. Use a tether, a harness and/or a life vest when there is a risk of falling overboard.

RĂ©sistance and elasticity

Polyester-Technora elastic rope 4mm diameter, doubled and knotted.

Rupture load: simple thread > 160kg, double thread, knotted > 300kg (measured on test bench), forming a loop > 600kg.

Overall static rupture load > 500kg.

All components (lumbar strap, polyester 50mm x 1mm, stainless steel rings 6mm, aluminium snaphook 8mm) have rupture loads above 500kg.

Controlled elasticity. The 4mm elastic rope has a relatively low elasticity (elongation ~ 50%)

A higher elongation would transform the belt into a slingshot.

A lower elongation would not damp the shocks, and there would be no freedom of movement.

Rupture load never reached in real situations, thanks to the elasticity of the rope.

The elasticity prevents the impacts. When the movements of the boat throw you out of balance, your velocity (cinetic energy) is slowed down progressively and there is no peak of force on the belt.

Validation

Use at sea. The device has been extensively used during a 7 months single-handed sailing to the Cape Horn and the Antarctic Peninsula. See Matxitxako Horn.
